Camera shows Murcia as a model of energy efficiency (12/05/2010)

The Mayor, Miguel Angel House, which is in Washington attending the Global U.S. Conference 2010, presented to the municipality as a model of efficiency, due not only to the measures promoted by the Local Strategy to Combat Climate Change, but and achievements.

In the various meetings held by the House with various world leaders, including the director of the International Energy Agency, Richard Jones, the issue that has aroused more interest has been the commitment of Murcia as a "city and pedestrians' moving towards a model of sustainable mobility, which gives private car ownership in favor of public transportation, organized around the tram and bicycle.

Jones also has very highly specific measures envisaged by the City to achieve a more rational use of energy, encouraging savings and strengthening its renewable energy to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020 by 40% compared those recorded in 2007.

To reach this goal, we propose to reduce by 20% through conservation measures, energy efficiency and renewable energy and another 20% through the creation of CO2 sinks (green areas).

Energy consumption per capita of Murcia in 2007 was already 35% below the average of Spain, thereby achieving further reduce the consumption of Murcia, which are themselves "efficient" is difficult, but not impossible.

The sustainable energy potential of solar energy passes through, so much so that it has increased by 600% installed capacity of solar PV in 4 years.

Have now been implemented 45 measures of the Action Plan for Sustainable Energy Murcia, it is possible to save 195 GWh / year (gigawatt hours per year), representing 117,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.

Among these actions taken include:

- Aid to citizens and businesses to invest in measures that will achieve energy savings in your home or commercial buildings.

- Energy efficiency in public lighting (introduction of astronomical clocks, LED technology, reducing power systems).

- Energy efficient traffic lights (LED technology introduction).

In terms of mobility:

- Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and actions arising.

In total, this action will save 187 GWh / year and 49,500 tCO2/yr.

- Implementation of the Tramway de Murcia (17 GWh / year and 4300 tCO2/yr)

- Director of the Bicycle Plan, which includes the network of cycling trails in the city roads with a total of 551km and designed and will be completed in 2016 (97km already been executed) and that has the launch of a new public system Bicycle hire.

Other key measures carried out are:

- Ordinance on energy efficiency in outdoor lighting (will save 8.6 GWh / year).

- Ordinance bioclimatic introduction of new buildings (will save 7 GWh / year).

- Municipal buildings efficient class B or higher.

- Energy efficiency measures and energy use of biogas in waste treatment plants and water purification.

Much of these measures are already implemented and represent a saving of 23 GWh / year and 16,000 tCO2/yr.

- Promotion of PV systems, both public and private.

(It has generated from January 2008 to April 2010 a saving of 80 GWh / year equivalent to 38 300 tCO2/yr).

- Energy audits of municipal buildings.

Among the measures of awareness and training are:

- Training workshops for household savings by changing habits that have resulted in average savings of 7% in household energy bills.

- Driving Courses efficient and safe movement around the city by bike.

- Campaigning in the field of sustainable mobility and energy conservation.
