The bicycle network that connects the center of Murcia with the university campus will open to traffic in June (02/05/2010)

The Director General of Transport and Ports Ministry of Public Works and Planning, Carmen Sandoval, said today that "the works of the bike path that connects the university campus and Los Jeronimos with Espinardo Murcia center are progressing and is expected to be completed next June. "

The director general said that "this new cycle network between the north and west of Murcia will run along Avenida Juan Carlos I to Espinado and connect the University of Murcia with San Antonio Catholic University, to the existing bike path that starts at the Malecón. "

The work, which has a total cost of 393,467 euros, was financed by 75 percent by the Ministry, which has invested 295,100 euros through the said Directorate General, while the City of Murcia has financed the remaining 25 percent , 98,367 euros.

The road will have a total length of 13.6 kilometers, of which 8.3 will be new construction, and structured in three sections.

The section 0, whose works have been completed, it starts at the local bike path nearly a mile long already in Juan Carlos I (at the intersection with Calle Condes de Barcelona) and goes to the campus through Los Espinardo Guiding the vial of Terra Natura and the current bridge the A-7 that provides access to the university.

The section 1, which were finished in 15 days, includes the bike path that starts on the Malecon (walkway Manterola) and passes down the track bike mota Segura river to the hamlet of Rincon de Seca.

The project also includes the continuation of this cycle path to Ucam through a new route of 2.3 miles from Rincon de Seca to the Catholic University, will happen on the road to La Nora and Guadalupe.

Finally, section 2 will close the two previous routes, connecting the two campuses of the service lane of the motorway A-7.

Carmen Sandoval said, "The goal of this grant is to respond to the demands of the citizens of the region and encourage the use of alternative transport to private vehicles."

The director general concluded the proceedings to expand the use of this type of transport favors "the progressive introduction of a new culture of mobility based on environmental quality and economic and energy saving, while public transport capacity and circulation pedestrians and cyclists. "
