A doctoral thesis shows the benefits of an antioxidant drink in Alzheimer's disease (05/02/2016)

The research results suggest that antioxidant drink they have developed could be used as a supplementary nutritional therapy to alleviate the symptoms of oxidative stress and inflammation in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease "since we have shown that this drink is able to increase the body's antioxidant defenses, prevents increased oxidation of proteins and decreases several inflammatory molecules, "says José Miguel Rubio.

Furthermore, the results of this research could be applied to other areas "as there are many diseases associated with increased oxidative stress and inflammation, such as cancer, arteriosclerosis, diabetes and other neurodegenerative disorders."

The study involved 100 volunteers (patients and control group) who consumed daily and randomly during the eight-month, the experimental drink and a placebo that were designed during the project.

According to this research external study, "has been shown in animals, which has led them to the disease, the ability of polyphenols to act against this oxidative and inflammatory stress," said José Miguel Rubio, adding that "all this led us to believe that the regular administration of antioxidants, particularly polyphenols, through diet, could compensate for the increased oxidative and inflammatory processes in patients with Alzheimer's disease. "

Oxidative stress in the body can be caused by an excess of oxidants (generated in situations such as smoking, obesity, cancer, aging, intense physical activity, liver disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, etc.), by a deficiency of agents antioxidants (such as poor diets in fruits, vegetables and fresh vegetables), or both factors at once.

"Increased oxidative stress is associated with aging and with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease."

What are polyphenols?

Polyphenols are a type of antioxidants found naturally in plants, fruits, vegetables and products obtained from them, such as olive oil, red wine, tea and fruit juices.

"A drink with high content of polyphenols is a drink rich in these antioxidants that give it a high antioxidant power. Our drink is enriched in polyphenols contained in green tea and apple," said the researcher.
