Environment starts working in local farms affected by the pine beetle infestation (12/12/2014)

The Department of Environment, who runs Adela Martinez-Cache, started this morning reviewing about 200 hectares of local mountains that have been affected by the pine beetle infestation, the Orthotomicus.

The invasion of these insects is penetrating in the trees weakened by drought and used as a space for breeding and larval development.

This very weak pine eventually die.

Following the instructions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, once checked the 200 hectares of municipal forest, are eliminated in the pines affected and thus prevent further spread of the pest.

The municipal workers will apear tree, cutting (30 cm) and debarking trunk.

Affected farms are located in the districts of Cobatillas and El Esparragal.

The Councillor for Environment expects and wants to end this plague that is affected to a significant portion of pines, but stresses that "fortunately has only reached 200 of the more than 1,200 hectares of municipal forests spread over some 20 plots".

Experts say there are three key does end the plague pine beetle: Rain, logging and traps.

Rain.

Most desirable solution.

Strengthens pine and makes it resistant to the pest through increased secretion of resin.

Tala.

Elimination of infected pines and debarking to prevent the beetles form within a new generation.

Traps.

Placed next to the trees produce a substance that turns to the beetle into a container that trap.
