The University of Murcia, a finalist for the Telefónica Ability Awards of attention to diversity (03/12/2014)

The University of Murcia is one of the finalists of the Telefónica Ability Awards, the highest award in the field of accessibility and attention to diversity in organizations.

In the last edition of the awards, which will be decided in January, the University of Murcia was among the top three national institutions in attention to diversity and the second Spanish university for the quality of care for this group.

This nomination is a new recognition of the Service to Diversity and Volunteerism (AdyV) of the University of Murcia, the Spanish higher education institution with the highest proportion of students with disabilities in their classrooms, with over 1,000 in this course, all with free registration.

This circumstance implies an effort that not only institutional, but also economic, as both the bonus fees (accounting stop sign over one million euros) and the other actions on equality of conditions, performed only with funds from the University without help from other governments.

Since 1998, the creation of the Service for Diversity and Volunteerism, several of its programs have been innovative nationally and implemented by other Spanish universities, such as the Notes program for the voluntary support notetaking to students with disabilities, or the Tutor Program helps these students by older peers.

Similarly, Murcia University was the first regional public institution to conduct a general study of accessibility of all facilities to address the deficiencies found.

Also, the University of Murcia was also one of the first in a firm commitment to the use of tablets and smartphones as educational tools for students with disabilities, especially in access to virtual campus and monitoring of classes.

At present, this institution has earmarked more than 170,000 euros of its budget to ensure equal conditions of students with disabilities in their classrooms.
