Traffic improve urban transport-bicycle connection (28/09/2013)

Facilitate access to public transport for people living in the urban perimeter is the initiative undertaken by the Department of Traffic and Transportation, through the European project MOBISEC, Mobility Initiatives European Sustainable communities.

The aim of this work, a pioneer in Murcia, is the implementation of measures to improve road safety for cyclists as well as increase their interaction and integration with public transport.

Thus, Murcia requiring public transport but refuse to use it because they live some distance from the stops may do so using the bike to take the tram or bus, leaving the bike parked in a safe place.

This avoids the use of private vehicles to what were virtually compelled by lack of support that will facilitate the use of urban transport.

Therefore, the Department of Traffic and Transportation has coordinated the project for the installation of eight enclosed bicycle parking in the vicinity of public transport, so that travelers can approach the stop with your bike, and there started the journey public transport daily, leaving the bike for safekeeping.

Initially selected locations are as follows:

- Espinardo Campus of the University of Murcia.

- Ronda Avenue South (near the City of Justice).

- Commuter Bus Station.

- Campus of the Catholic University San Antonio (end of tram line).

- Avenida Juan Carlos I (Espinardo).

- Avenida Juan de Borbón (Churra).

- Avenida Juan de Borbón (paratrooper Flag Square, Santiago and Zaraiche).

- Ronda Avenue South (Patiño).

The selection of these locations was made according to their suitability for ways to connect with high traffic and public transport, which in turn cover areas of high origin or destination of travelers.

The project MOBISEC allow the exchange of experiences in sustainable mobility policies, especially the use of bicycles, among the cities participating in the same.

The project includes actions to improve the public information on the use of public transportation.

This advanced web tools will be used and awareness campaigns, to make available to the public information about the services available.

In the European project MOBISEC participating European cities: Varna in Bulgaria and Oldham in the UK.

The project has a total budget of 1,271,000 euros (500,000 euros for Murcia) and is funded by 50% by the Directorate General for Transport of the European Commission.
