Over 50% of prisoners are victims of a crime in jail, according to a doctoral thesis at the University of Murcia (05/09/2013)

More than half of the prison population is the victim of a criminal act while in prison, according to one of the conclusions of the doctoral thesis at the Faculty of Law of the University of Murcia by Francisco Caravaca Sanchez.

The study also notes that the most common types of victimization are oral threats and thefts, "which creates a tense atmosphere in the prison context."

Regarding drug use inside prisons, the thesis says that 61 percent of inmates surveyed had taken some kind of drugs, including alcohol, during the last month.

Hashish and alcohol, followed by cocaine, were found to be the most consumed substances, "being also significant, on the other hand, adds the work-the number of sexual assaults."

For the realization of the thesis, the author, who has been rated as suitable cum laude, conducted a survey in which a total of 661 inmates of two prisons of Murcia, which represented about half of the population recluse then.

The study was conducted by professors at the University of Murcia Aurelio Sanchez Moon and Mary Faustina.
