Murcia City Council is leading the bid for the declaration of Biosphere Reserve of the Sierras and Murcia Golf by UNESCO (26/12/2012)

The initiative aims to promote the conservation and sustainable development in "The Owl country".

The mayor said that "we have a unique opportunity to demonstrate the commitment of Murcia with the conservation and protection of our environment, and also recognizes the environmental wealth, a job well done in recent years."

The 88.5% of the affected territory belongs to the municipality of Murcia, while 11.5% is in Alhama and Fuente Alamo.

The application also has the support of the Autonomous Community.

At present there is no reserve recognized by UNESCO in the region of Murcia and in the Levant.

Murcia City Council is committed to recognizing the value of the natural environment and to this end, is leading a bid for the declaration of the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierras and Murcia Golf by UNESCO.

The geographical area comprising central area is protected natural areas by regional and European legislation, including Carrascoy Regional Park and El Valle and two spaces that are part of the Natura 2000 European network: the Site of Community Importance ( LIC) "Carrascoy and The Valley" and the Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) "Monte El Valle and saws and Escalona Altaona".

Murcia City Council is leading the bid, with the collaboration of the Autonomous Region and the municipalities of Alhama and Fuente Alamo in municipalities which extends for 11.5% of the more than 50,000 acres that make up the space, while Murcia belongs to 88.5% of the territory.

An application already has the support of the Autonomous National Parks, Ministry of Environment, national managing body of the UNESCO MAB Programme.

The submission of the application took place this morning in a ceremony in which the mayor has spoken of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, and which was also attended by the presidents of the municipalities in Alhama de Murcia, Fernando Alfonso Ceron, and Fuente Alamo, Maria Antonia Conesa, besides the Environment Councillor Murcia, Adela Martinez-Cachá.

Biosphere Reserves are areas recognized by UNESCO in the international framework of the "People and Biosphere" (The Man and the Biosphere Programme, MAB), an intergovernmental program that aims to improve the overall relationship of people with their environment, while intended to promote sustainable development based on the effort of the local community and scientific.

The World Network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO recognized currently consists of 610 reserves in 117 countries, of which 43 are in Spain, although none in the region of Murcia and in the Mediterranean Levant.

Thus, the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierras and Murcia Golf will make a decisive contribution to the network level Spanish UNESCO world and particularly to the Mediterranean Basin.

Biosphere Reserves are areas with significant natural values ​​where the population has a close relationship with the environment, an interaction that makes it different from the traditional concept of protected space.

This figure is to reconcile the development of society as a whole to the conservation of the natural environment, considered as a tool to enhance and ensure the sustainable social and economic development linked to biodiversity.

Thus, these spaces fulfill very positive both for the conservation of ecosystems, species and landscapes, and for the promotion of economic and human development which is sustainable from the standpoint of ecologically sustainable.

Social, economic and conservation

The opportunity of the declaration of the Biosphere Reserve is of great interest to the municipality and the Region of Murcia, since it would get interesting with benefits both in the field of conservation and the social and economic.

Regarding the former, Biosphere Reserves promote all policies aimed at improving the environment and quality of life of the population.

In turn, in the socioeconomic, promote economic activities and sectors that are environmentally friendly, feature a prominent boost to rural tourism sector, are a stimulus for research, training and awareness, and involve an interesting picture quality for producers and entrepreneurs in the area.

The Owl Country

Environmental values ​​of the area of ​​the Biosphere Reserve of the Sierras and Murcia Golf are paramount.

The area is noted for its importance to the conservation of the vertebrate fauna internationally and includes one of the most important nesting areas and spread of Mediterranean raptors, highlighting the high density of pairs of owls, the highest known in the world today .

Thus the city of Murcia has chosen as the theme for the Biosphere Reserve of "The Owl country".

At the level of flora, the area is noted for its outstanding botanical values ​​with abundance of endemic and iberoafricanas, harboring populations of four species in the Spanish list of species endangered or vulnerable.

They have been identified 27 types of habitats of Community interest from those in the Habitats Directive of the European Union.

Moreover, from the cultural point of view the area between houses an interesting heritage, with plenty of Cultural Interest and archaeological sites and numerous elements and traditions of ethnographic interest.

Civic Engagement

The proposed Biosphere Reserve will be presented on March 30, 2013 to the National Committee of the MAB program in the autumn rise Paris International Committee for final approval by UNESCO, which likely will be delayed until summer 2014.

Citizen participation is essential in the declaration of a Biosphere Reserve, so that the city of Murcia is planning to develop an intense interest in the coming months.
