The Digital City Award Google recognizes the efforts of Murcia in the implementation of new technologies (28/05/2012)

The Mayor, Miguel Angel House, has received the award this morning Google Digital City distinguishes SMEs whose cities are more active on the Internet and perform a more intensive use of new technologies to enhance its activities and services on the web.

House has received the award from Barbara Navarro, director of Public Policy and Institutional Issues for Google Spain, Portugal and Greece.

Although this is the first edition of these awards, the initiative has taken place in cities in the UK, France and Italy.

Among the parameters considered for the award, in addition to that companies website and have made some business through it, also praised the use of tools that make Google, especially AdWords, which is the advertising system Google's Internet-whose use in Murcia from November 2010 to November 2011 grew 40%.

Smart City

In recent years, the City has made a firm commitment to information society and technological development of the city.

"Transforming our cities into Smart Cities is the ideal tool to get citizens enjoy a better quality of life thanks to the advantages offered by new technologies," said House, who has also highlighted that the use of ICT "carries greater energy savings, greater efficiency and effectiveness. "

Technological innovation promoted by the City Council covers many aspects, including the creation of a Room Network Free Internet Access and Telecenters, consisting of 27 classrooms, 293 workstations, and nearly 11,000 registered users, the operation of a Platform for Tele-with a free offering of 23 courses-the possibility of the European Accreditation of Computer Management or itinerant office courses.

Moreover, the introduction of broadband to connect municipal buildings and the extension of wifi areas in the municipality, currently makes available 200 access points in public squares and gardens.

The Mayor also referred to the website of the City, which last year registered more than 8 million hits, and where citizens can perform many procedures, especially related to the population census or tax rate.

At present, there are 3,197 accounts created in the folder of the Citizen and 4,128 email accounts.
