UPyD Murcia advocates joint custody as preferred option in cases of separation and divorce (22/03/2012)

The mayor Sotomayor states that a law is necessary "to give equal treatment to both parents" and "ensure the interests of the child", making them jointly responsible to both parents in the education of children

The Municipal UPyD in Murcia City Council shall, through their councilor Jose Antonio Sotomayor, a motion at the next full City defending the possibility of joint custody as preferred option in separations and divorces.

As explained Sotomayor, Progress and Democracy Union is the only training that urgently demand the prosecution of a national law governing the custody, so the motion will urge the full City to take action on this measure.

"Society has changed and so must the laws accordingly," said the mayor Sotomayor.

"We believe the time sole custody by one parent has passed" since both father and mother have actively incorporated into the labor market and, therefore, "awarded by default to the mother the role of parenting "is in contradiction with the policies of equality and progress.

Currently, in most cases are minor children by one parent, leaving the other to a secondary role.

Murcia UPyD defends the possibility of joint custody to 50% by both parents, as long as the situation permits, adapting the legal framework in Spain to ensure the equal rights of all citizens.

"For encimad all, should prioritize the interests of the child to lead a stable everyday" continuous Sotomayor, "and their right to an education with both parents."
