2,000 students learn to identify and care for basic crops of Murcia in the courtyards of their schools (11/03/2012)

13 centers participating in Infant and Primary School Gardens project of the Department of Environment

Municipal schools are increasingly relying on the school gardens initiative of the Department of Environment as an excellent resource to turn the school into a place that will enable their students about their experiences multiple natural and rural environment, understand the relationships and dependencies we have with him and practice attitudes and habits of care and environmental responsibility.

This has been proven Councilwoman Martinez-Cachá Adela who has visited the CEIP Nuestra Señora de los Angeles Dry Corner, which has launched the school garden for the first time this year.

In this center the students began with the planting of winter that began in November with beans, peas, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, lettuce varieties, etc..

From then until the children have worked in the maintenance of the garden, while they have learned different aspects of these plants have investigated the origin, the part of the plant are eaten, their identification, they have watered. ..

Soon have to collect the harvest and prepare for spring planting and summer where you plan to plant: zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers ...

intended to be part of the harvest before the course ends in June.

This year is conducting the fourth annual school gardens in schools, activity framed by the Municipal Environmental Education Program "Murcia, ecology of a city"

This activity now has 13 centers with the participation of about 2,000 infant and primary students using the services offered by the Department of Environment, ranging from loan servicing tools and an environmental educator for maintenance activities advice and implementation.

In addition, the teacher uses the garden for teaching purposes, since this is an excellent opportunity to work the transverse lines, especially environmental education.

Topics such as consumption, food, garbage and recycling, health and many others have a place to work them into the school garden, besides being able to provide useful learning for social development of students within and outside the educational setting.
