UPyD Murcia proposes to implement Linux at City Hall to save up to one million euros (08/03/2012)

The Municipal Progress and Democracy Union in the city of Murcia proposes, through his spokesman, Ruben Serna, assess the possibility of implementing the free and open operating system Linux on the computers of the City of Murcia.

This measure aims to save up to one million euros in licenses to use Windows as well as being an alternative that does not affect basic services nor does any social cost.

Ruben Serna explains, "UPyD commitment to a more transparent management, open, efficient, collaborative and rational, with the lowest possible cost."

For the city of Murcia would a minimum initial investment in training and savings in a consistory with a size like the capital "would be around one million euros," a function of time and degree of implementation.

In addition, there are currently at European level to support governments and administrations to adapt their equipment to free software, Serna said.

Priority promotion of free software, ensure transparent information in public administration or defense of Net Neutrality are initiatives that were already reflected in the electoral program of training, clarifies Serna.

UPyD Murcia municipal urge the House to rule on this initiative, to begin with and the procedures for the study and implementation gradual and phased throughout the municipal administration of this free operating system and free alternative to Microsoft and its Windows system.

For Ruben Serna, "we want to ensure that cuts unnecessary spending priority" versus "social services".

"We are convinced," continued the spokesman for the formation magenta, "which can be cut in many parts before measures that have a social cost."

UPyD Murcia considers that there are enough examples of proven efficiency in public administrations in Spain using Linux, as the entire University of Murcia, Extremadura Board or the City of Zaragoza.

Overseas, the Japanese government and French, or the city of Munich also have successfully adopted this system.

"Even with changing the license for a single computer, whether it be saving," concludes Reuben Serna.

Currently, total spending on software in the city of Murcia is for a total of 1 300 000 euros.

The Linux operating system, easy to use and free distribution is one of the best examples of free software, along with the Mozilla browser or office suite Open Office.
