A conference at the University of Murcia studying medical and industrial applications of optical technologies (06/06/2011)

The University of Murcia held these days an international conference on adaptive optics, which will address the applications until Wednesday in industry and medicine of these techniques that compensate for deviations of light and improve, therefore the image.

Organized by the Laboratory of Optics of the University, headed by Professor Pablo Artal, Congress have registered 200 specialists from most European countries and the United States, Russia, China, India, Canada, Brazil or South Africa.

During today's session will explore the applications of adaptive optics in biomedical imaging, which will allow, among other things, look in the eye and improve diagnosis.

Prof. Artal said that through the use of these technologies, be possible to replace the spokes in small hospitals for powerful lasers operating by the light, but warned that it will take about 10 to 15 years to make it a reality.

Other applications that require time for their effective implementation are those given in the fields of industry and telecommunications, where the installation of adaptive optics techniques to optimize the performance wiring.

This day will be completed with the discussion about the most appropriate optics to form the image better, meeting which will follow on Tuesday and Wednesday, devoted to recent advances in microscopy and presentations of participating companies, including which include technology-based company Voptica SL, owned by the University of Murcia, and other Americans, mainly.

Adaptive optics emerges in the years of the Cold War for military applications, as happened with the so-called "Star Wars" initiative of President Ronald Reagan sought to destroy enemy missiles using a large research component in this technique.

After the Cold War, took on a more civilian appearance, with applications in industry and biomedicine.

This meeting, which takes place in the University Community Centre, Campus Espinardo, will put in direct relation to military laboratory scientists United States with his Russian and Chinese colleagues.

Held every two years, the last congress was held in Moscow, where delegates elected to the eighth edition Murcia over the headquarters in Paris or Pretoria.

The Congress was opened by the Rector of the University of Murcia, José Antonio Cobacho, and the teacher said Artal.
