On the occasion of its thirtieth anniversary, the Sociology Department of the UMU has organized a series of conferences.
The next one, entitled "In defense of degrowth," will be given by Professor Carlos Taibo on Thursday, April 19, at 12 noon, at the Faculty of Economics and Business.
Taibo is a full professor of Political Science and Administration at the Autonomous University of Madrid.
He has been director of the program of Russian studies of the Institute of New Technologies of the same university.
He is the author of some twenty books in Spanish, Galician and Portuguese, mostly related to transitions in contemporary Central and Eastern Europe.
He is a defender and supporter of anti-globalization movements, as well as of economic decline and direct democracy in the face of economic growth and representative democracy.
It has criticized very hard the philosophy that underlies in the economic growth that separates the growth of the well-being and of the progress.
In his presentation, and taking as his starting point his previous work, Carlos Taibo contrasts the concept of "degrowth" with those of growth, productivity and competitiveness that broad sectors of economic science defend as the most direct way to achieve general welfare.
However, for the author, this new concept is the only way to ensure the future of the planet.
It is, therefore, a conference on a subject of great relevance and interest in the field of sociology and economics.
