Schoolchildren from the Region can attend environmental talks at the Molinos del Río and conduct orientation games and safe boat trips to discover this natural ecosystem

The students of the Region of Murcia have from today the opportunity to discover the natural environment of the river Segura through the activity 'Murcia River Educa', which have been jointly launched by the City Council, Aguas de Murcia and La Verdad, in collaboration with the Club Murcia Remo.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, who presented the activity on the Manterola walkway together with the managing director of Aguas de Murcia, José Albaladejo, and the general director of Truth, Antonio González, said that "environmental awareness in this environment Murcia has cost us decades to recover is a responsibility of all, something that we must inculcate the new generations of Murcia, who today can enjoy this unique natural ecosystem.

In this way, schoolchildren in the region can attend environmental talks given by specialists in the Molinos del Río (about the water cycle in cities, the network of irrigation ditches, waterwheels and mills that integrates the hydraulic heritage of Murcia ... ), as well as making trips in specially insured boats, to guarantee the well-being of the participants.

The first ones to do it today were the students of the Samaniego de Alcantarilla school.

"The river becomes a natural classroom that brings students the flora and fauna of this environment, its history (the before and after its recovery), heritage and the value of water for Murcia," said José Ballesta, who He added that "there will be three hours of intense fun and learning that will accompany young people forever."

At the same time, the students will approach the values of the sport activity through canoeing and orientation games, discovering the possibilities of the sheet of water as it passes through the center of the city as an optimal environmental environment for water sports and outdoors.

Before getting on the boat, with the life jacket and shovel, each student will learn the basics of canoeing.

The boats will leave from the new pier enabled under the Manterola gangway.

Back to the Segura

Murcia is today one of the few Spanish capitals that has an urban and navigable river, which crosses the heart of the capital, thanks to the comprehensive program of purification and reuse of water, which has allowed "today Murcia we can look again at our river with pride, "said José Ballesta.

"El Segura has been distinguished as the European river where the best environmental restoration has been developed, thanks to a joint effort led by the CHS, enjoying today an optimal state of health that not only benefits the quality of water, but also the ecosystems linked to the river, so that species previously threatened by pollution, such as otters, eels and certain birds, have once again inhabited the Segura channel and its natural environment, "said the mayor.
