José Ballesta initiates the Levantine Manifesto for Water (15/02/2018)

Given the endemic drought suffered by the Spanish Levant and threatening the future of Murcia's fruit and vegetable sector, José Ballesta subscribes to the defense of the Huerta de Europa and the Tajo-Segura transfer.

The Plenary Session of the City Council of Murcia endorsed this Manifesto, through the motion presented by councilor Antonio Navarro last November.

The mayor points out that "the Tajo-Segura transfer represents a long history of success for the Spanish people, for what it supposes of social cohesion, territorial cohesion and equality of opportunities for the families of dry Spain"

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today signed the Levantine Water Manifesto at the headquarters of the Central Irrigation Union of the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct (SCRATS), in the presence of the president of the entity, Lucas Jiménez and council members Eduardo Martínez- Oliva, Susana Hernández and Mario Gómez.

The mayor said that "the Tajo-Segura aqueduct has represented a long history of success for the Spanish people, which means social cohesion for the territories of dry Spain and equal opportunities for the thousands and thousands of people who have achieved work, dignity and hope for the future for their peoples and families;

as well as territorial cohesion, since this type of infrastructure structures territories and unites peoples, they do not understand boundaries or borders. "

"Thousands and thousands of Murcians throughout generations have found in this infrastructure a hope for the future for their families and they have always done so with responsibility.

Because the system that has always been followed is, first of all, to give priority to the territories that have water so that they can spend it freely according to their needs, be it consumption, agriculture or the environment.

Secondly, of the remaining water, after having used all the necessary water, a percentage of it is requested.

And, thirdly, the fixed price is paid.

These are the bases on which this process has been governed ", emphasized the alderman.

"As City Council of Murcia, and also as Murcians and Spaniards, we are very proud of what this infrastructure has meant and of all the work that has been done during these years from the Central Union of Irrigators of the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct," he concluded. José Ballesta

The Tajo-Segura transfer has an impact on Spanish GDP of more than 4,000 million euros and generates more than 100,000 jobs.

In addition, it benefits 200,000 hectares of irrigated land and more than 44 million fruit trees.

Plenary support

Given the endemic drought suffered by the Spanish Levant and threatening the future of Murcia's fruit and vegetable sector, the City of Murcia adheres to the defense of the Huerta de Europa and the transfer, a support that the Plenary supported with the votes in favor of the Popular Group, Socialist Group and Citizens, through the motion presented by councilor Antonio Navarro in the November plenary session.

The Manifesto demands that "the durability of the Tajo-Segura Aqueduct is guaranteed as a basic pillar of the future of the towns of Murcia, Alicante and Almeria, where the productive sector of agriculture represents 23% of the economy".

It also claims "the imperative need to achieve the maximum possible production of existing desalination plants, complete the process of modernization of irrigation, optimize the use of volumes from water regeneration and the execution of hydraulic works under equal conditions."

The text also calls for "the implementation of a tariff for irrigation and homes fair and proportionate to the rest of the country's users and regulatory changes that facilitate the processing of assignments of rights."
