The City of Murcia reduces by 44% the CO2 emissions derived from municipal activity (26/01/2018)

Mainly driven by the purchase of cleaner electricity, highlighting the 4.15% decrease in electricity consumption in buildings of the local administration, while the commitment to sustainable mobility has led to a 27% decrease in the cost of gasoline and 3.2% of diesel For the second consecutive year, the City Council gets its registration in the National Registry of Carbon Footprint managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment

The modifications introduced in the consumption of electrical energy in the municipal facilities allowed the City of Murcia to reduce in 2016 by 44% the CO 2 emissions compared to the previous year.

The calculation of the carbon footprint is part of the actions that the City of Murcia is doing in the fight against climate change through the Department of Urban Planning, Environment and Garden.

It determines the emissions of greenhouse gases derived from the services provided by the local administration to citizens.

They have taken into account, on the one hand, the activity carried out in heating and sanitary hot water in schools, sports facilities and Local Police;

the consumption of fuels in vehicles and leaks of fluorinated gases in maintenance of municipal buildings.

On the other hand, purchased electricity has been accounted for institutional buildings, schools, nursery schools, municipal housing, public lighting or traffic lights.

From this work it is derived that in 2016 the municipal facilities issued 15,725 tons of CO 2 equivalent (0.036 t CO2eq per inhabitant), which represents a 44% reduction compared to the emissions recorded in the previous year.

The bulk of this reduction is mainly due to the purchase of cleaner electricity by the City Council, with a very low emission factor, and is in addition to the decrease in recorded energy consumption, in line with the emissions reduction plan established to 2020.

In fact, the electricity consumption in municipal buildings has been reduced by 4.15% and the commitment to sustainable mobility by the City has resulted in a 27% reduction in gasoline consumption and 3.2% in diesel consumption .

Once the carbon footprint of 2016 has been calculated, the City Council has carried out the registration process in the National Carbon Footprint Registry, managed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, which quantifies the emissions of CO 2 derived of the services that the local Administration provides to the citizens through the consumption of electricity and fossil fuels of all the dependencies that are municipal property or over which it exercises control through its management.

The Department of Urban Planning, Environment and Garden, directed by Antonio Navarro, through ALEM, the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change, has set itself the goal of achieving an 8% reduction in emissions by 2020, through improvement in energy efficiency and consumption reduction.

To this end, measures have been put in place such as the improvement of energy efficiency in municipal facilities, the acquisition of clean vehicles for the municipal fleet, the promotion of self-consumption, the replacement of the use of heating oil and the increase of awareness-raising measures, like the 50/50 pilot project to promote energy saving in 10 schools.

"Although the goal of 8% emission reduction has already been far exceeded, we want to reach it by reducing electricity consumption, not only through the purchase of clean energy," said Antonio Navarro.

Navarro explained that both the registration in the registry and the calculation are voluntary, but Murcia wanted to adhere to an exemplary vocation to encourage more and more Murcian companies to follow this same path.

Once the footprint is calculated, the objective is to incorporate the city into the 48 municipalities throughout Spain that already appear in the National Carbon Footprint Registry.

Determine this indicator is not an exclusive tool for the administration, since they can be implemented by companies, institutions and even in homes.

To do this, the City will soon offer carbon footprint training workshops for companies, similar to those that have been offered since 2015.
