The City Council consults citizens on the measures they consider most effective and urgent for Murcia's adaptation to climate change (18/01/2018)

The City wants to know what are the measures of adaptation to climate change that Murcia value as more effective and more urgent to implement in the municipality.

For this, the councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Garden, Antonio Navarro announced this morning the opening of a public consultation for citizens to express their views on the matter.

The on-line consultation is available until February 19, through the TuMurcia application and the municipal portal http://participaentransparencia.es/ .

It aims to understand the concerns of citizens about climate change and 30 of the 61 adaptation measures included in the Strategy are valued.

The result of this consultation will help ALEM to face the last phase of the project, the prioritization of adaptation measures based on a multicriteria qualitative analysis, which in addition to incorporating the economic cost, will include other variables related to social, environmental and cultural benefits. , among others, of the proposed measures.

This prioritization is essential when structuring strategic planning until 2030.

Throughout 2017, the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change, ALEM, has worked on the preparation of the 2030 Municipal Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change through a very extensive and representative participatory process.

During the meeting, 11 meetings were held in which nearly a hundred representatives of the public sector, companies, experts, organizations, associations, universities and individual citizens participated, which allowed them to gather their points of view and proposals for the future.

As a result of this process, the municipality has an Adaptation Strategy that is articulated in four strategic objectives, aligned with four main approaches: governance;

society;

research and technology;

and good practices in urban and rural ecology.

Objective 1. Developing and implementing a planning model of the municipality of Murcia, agreed, integrated, balanced and resilient to climate change

Objective 2. Preparing society for the extreme risks arising from climate change

Objective 3. Integrating pilot projects, good practices, innovators and exemplars of adaptation to climate change in municipal management

Objective 4. Conserving the biodiversity of Murcia and its ecosystem services

The Strategy is structured in 11 goals, 25 lines of action and 61 adaptation measures that allow us to comply with the strategic objectives.

On the other hand, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Garden has taken the opportunity to expose the actions planned for 2018 on climate change, among which the first study of "Citizen Perception in the Municipality of Murcia on Energy and Climate Change ", with the aim of measuring the attitudes that the Murcian population presents towards various issues related to climate change and energy.

The elaboration of a Climate Change Adaptation Strategy is one of the commitments acquired by the Murcia City Council following its accession in 2016 to the European Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy initiative.
