Signed the agreement for the XXIII edition of the Vargas Llosa Novel Prize (12/01/2018)

The convalescent building, headquarters of the Rector of the University of Murcia (UMU), hosted this Friday the act of signing the agreement for the convening of the XXIII edition of the Vargas Llosa Novel Prize, in which this institution, the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation and the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library Foundation.

The originals to participate in the Prize, which has an endowment of 12,000 euros, may be presented within a period ending on the fifteenth of July.

The agreement states that the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation will pay the amount of the prize money, while the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library Foundation will assume the costs of the first edition of the winning novel.

For its part, the UMU will be responsible for receiving the originals, designating the members of the jury and publicizing the Prize, among other activities.

During the event, the Vice Chancellor for Communication and Culture, Mónica Galdana Pérez Morales, congratulated all the participating institutions for the decision and delivery maintained over many years, and highlighted the work carried out by the president of the jury, the UMU professor Francisco Florit.

He thanked the support of all the institutions that collaborate in the Award and highlighted the full freedom he enjoys as president of the jury.

On behalf of the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation, its first vice-president, Clemente García, has suggested the possibility of holding an event that will give value to the Prize and that could have Mario Vargas Llosa as the main protagonist.

All the parties have accepted the idea and have promised their collaboration to make the efforts to get the presence of the Peruvian author who gives his name to the Prize and the winners of the different editions.

In this sense, the general director of the Virtual Library Foundation, Manuel Bravo Lifante, has committed to take the necessary steps in this regard.

In addition, he has advanced the project of this organization to open a portal specifically dedicated to this Novel Prize, which will mean an international visualization of it.

The professor of the UMU José María Pozuelo, one of the members of the jury, said that he was proud to belong to an institution that holds a prize of this importance.

The act of signing the agreement was also attended by the territorial director in Murcia of the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation, Antonio Rubira.
