European project led by the UMU will study the value of dry land (10/07/2017)

The European AmdryC4 Life Project, led by the University of Murcia (UMU), which was presented today, July 10, in the building of Convalescence, headquarters of the Rector, has as main objectives the enhancement of dry land , The carbon capture by them and the mitigation of the adverse effects of climate change.

This was highlighted by the main researcher of the research group that has been commissioned by the Project, Professor María José Martínez, Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Geology and Soil Science.

The teacher pointed out that this is a project of great importance for Europe that is affected by the problem of desertification and climate change.

The duration of the same will be 52 months, and its total budget, 1.8 million euros.

As for the personnel that will participate in it, he has indicated that it will be about thirty, in addition to the contracting that can be carried out for specific aspects.

It has also highlighted the participation of the Autonomous Community, the farmers, through COAG-Rural Initiative and the organizations Natural Environment Engineering and New Culture for Climate Association.

The idea is to value rainfed agriculture in terms of its beneficial contribution to climate change, he said, "since it can act as a carbon sink."

He also pointed out that the most advanced technical means, including the use of infrared drones, will be used to carry out the studies - with fieldwork and laboratory work.

The event also counted with the intervention of the vice-rector of Research of the UMU, Professor Antonio Juan García, who has highlighted the importance that the Project has for the Region of Murcia and the importance of Science as the engine of development.

For its part, the Director General of the Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosauro, has commented that climate change is a fact and that we must work in search of strategies that reduce its effects.

The event was closed by the rector, José Orihuela, who has put special emphasis on pointing out the strength of the research groups of the institution he chairs and the permanent commitment of the same to its environment.
