The decision to apply a drastic pruning in the ficus of Santo Domingo has been adopted after consulting with different experts in this type of trees over the last few hours to assess various criteria before acting.
It has not been possible to completely rule out the possibility that in the future new branches could be produced "and our priority is to guarantee the safety of citizens."
The operation has been managed and coordinated by municipal officials of parks and gardens, who "expect that the tree will regain strength and that it will have to be monitored continuously," confirmed Councilman José Guillén.
"We are aware that we are facing a difficult situation but the responsibility is ours and we assume it," said Guillén.
On the other hand, between the last hours of today and the first of tomorrow will reduce the perimeter of security bounded around the tree so that the square will regain normality as soon as possible.
Once finished the work on the tree will remove the metallic remains of the structure of the damaged pergola and attached benches.
