The City of Murcia joins the 'Less packets and more slippers' on World No Tobacco Day (31/05/2017)

The councilor of sports and health, Felipe Coello, visited this morning the information stand that the City of Murcia has placed on Avenida de la Libertad on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day.

A point in which they have given appointment professionals who have explained to all those interested of the damages that smoking causes in the health of the people, as well as the benefits of ending this bad habit.

"With the motto" Fewer packs and more slippers "we want the Murcia people to be aware, not only of the need to give up smoking, but also of the fact that Sport is an important point in their lives, to improve their health and prevent future diseases, "Coello explained.

Tobacco dependence is recognized by WHO as a chronic addictive disease, which often requires multiple interventions by health care services, and repeated attempts by patients to achieve prolonged periods of abstinence or permanent cessation of smoking.

The prevalence of smoking in the Region of Murcia was 28.4% (25.6% daily consumption and 2.9% occasional consumption), 3 points higher than the average in Spain, which stands at 25.4% (23% daily consumption and 2.4% occasional consumption).

It is estimated that in the Region of Murcia 340,000 people are smokers.

50% of the population declared themselves to be non-smokers, similar to the Spanish average (49%), while the percentage of ex-smokers stood at 21.6%, clearly lower than the national average (25.7% ).

Among men in the Region, the prevalence of active smoking (daily and sporadic consumption) was 30.6%, and in women it was 26.4%.

The project treats smoking as a chronic addictive disease, the main preventable risk factor for numerous diseases, the leading cause of death and the greatest public health problem in our society.

Both active and passive smoking is associated with high morbidity and mortality and is a major health problem.

The aim is to reduce active smoking rates in the treatment population, to present a guide to quitting smoking, to produce a medical history of smoking, to prevent the occurrence of diseases and, therefore, to reduce the rates of passive smoking for Avoid the damage caused by tobacco in the health of non-smokers.

In the last year more than 4,000 consultations were made and 264 new cases were detected, of which 13 were relapsed.
