Izpisua proposed to the Princess of Asturias Research (06/05/2017)

The Nobel Prize in Medicine Jules Hoffmann has presented the candidature to be granted the Princess of Asturias Award for Scientific and Technical Research 2017, jointly, to scientists Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, Carlos López Otín and Guido Kroemer, considering that His works represent a multidisciplinary approach to the study and understanding of molecular and cellular mechanisms that trigger the generation and tissue degeneration that finally lead to aging.

The work developed by these world-class researchers, as evidenced by the more than 100 joint publications in the three most prestigious international journals (Cell, Nature and Science), illustrates how fundamental scientific research helps the cure of associated diseases To aging that have a devastating effect on mankind, as well as to the development of treatments that allow slowing, even reversing, aging.

Dr. Izpisua Belmonte (born in Hellín), a professor at the Salk Institute (USA) and an Extraordinary Professor of Developmental Biology at UCAM (Spain) is one of the most relevant researchers worldwide in one of the most promising areas of Biomedicine, Regenerative Medicine.

His work has been fundamental to elucidate the cellular and molecular bases of differentiation and regeneration of tissues and organs, as well as for the development of new models in vitro and in vivo that are allowing a better understanding of the triggers of the process of human aging .

In addition, Dr. Izpisua Belmonte has developed new technologies of gene editing that will allow to treat and prevent the transmission of mitochondrial and nuclear diseases associated with aging, etc.

The Catholic University of Murcia, to which it belongs, finances and collaborates in its investigations, is supporting this candidacy by means of diverse actions like the collection of institutional adhesions and of personal signatures, through the web izpisua.ucam.edu.

Carlos López Otín is a biochemist, professor in the area of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Department of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Oviedo, highlighting his research in diseases such as cancer, arthritis or hereditary diseases.

Cell biologist Guido Kroemer is a cell biology researcher at INSERM and a professor at the Paris Descartes University School of Medicine and has contributed to the understanding of the role of mitochondria in cell death.
