Let's change Murcia staged in the Plaza de la Merced everyday refugee women (05/05/2016)

Tents, hanging clothes, bottles of murky water and puddles simulated on the ground on brown paper have shaped the scene of the performance that the sectoral group of Women, Feminism and Equal Let's change Murcia has mounted this afternoon in the Plaza de la Merced to recreate the space in which they live thousands of refugees and thus enforce their rights.

"These women suffer the anguish of having to deal with threats to their personal safety, to the point that in many cases sexually and victims of criminal networks trafficking in human beings are exploited," said Margarita Guerrero, Councillor training and active member of the performance.

While women wearing traditional clothing, recreated the life of refugee, it has read a manifesto to emphasize that these constitute a third of asylum seekers and often suffer multiple forms of discrimination, which particularly affects unaccompanied women and girls, pregnant women, those with disabilities and the elderly.

The office of UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) has reported cases of violence and abuse, including sexual violence, against women and refugee children during their travel and accommodation centers that are saturated.

In reception facilities and transit of the European Union the most basic needs are not met to prevent violence, such as bathrooms, showers and separate bedrooms for women.

The key measures that make up the Common European Asylum System have not guaranteed so far a coherent and responsive approach regarding gender for women seeking protection in Europe despite the existence of legislation and policies designed to operate in response to gender considerations .

Even when policies are gender sensitive, these are not always effectively implemented in practice.

To us change Murcia, improved protection of refugee women and girls taking into consideration gender, creating safe and legal channels to the EU to prevent risking their lives and avoid forced returns and the violation of human rights is necessary and infringement of the right of asylum enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental rights and the rights of women in armed conflict established.
