Murcia, a city in the woods (22/06/2010)

Since 2007, the City of Murcia puts environmental awareness in the procurement of forest products.

This approach, adopted by decision of the Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, is to prioritize the acquisition of those items that have been certified by a system that ensures sustainable management of forests.

This management policy has earned the City the recognition of "City of Forests" which has given WWF Spain.

Miguel Angel House has received this morning this distinction, which has been delivered by Enrique Segovia, Director of Conservation of WWF Spain.

The event was attended by the responsible Environment and Urban Quality, Adela Martinez-Cache, and have been invited the heads of municipal services, local business sector and suppliers of City Hall.

Murcia has thus become one of the 9 Spanish institutions that make up the Centre "Cities for Forests", along with Barcelona, Benicarlo, Gava, Leon, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Madrid, Sant Boi de Llobregat and the Council of Toledo .

There are 9 Spanish cities that form the green list to implement a responsible purchasing program to check the origin of forest products they consume.

Leading

Forests are the origin of wood used in items such as furniture, gardens, building construction material, office paper, etc.

At the same time, provide invaluable benefits to humans, as they filter water, act as shock absorbers of global warming, provide many products (wood, cork, medicinal plants, etc.) Serve as places of entertainment, house plants and animals and are essential systems for the local economy and globally.

The decree passed in 2007 ensures that the City of Murcia not eat wood or products from illegal logging in third countries and, in contrast, favors the acquisition of those from certified forests.

Thus, the environmental quality criteria introduced in public tenders valued the use of certified wood to the highest possible requirements to ensure its origin, excluding the proposals related to illegal logging.

Furthermore, in the case of paper takes into account recycling.

When buying wood furniture or parks and gardens, pavements, buildings, equipment and office furniture, is given a higher value on their purchases, offering the best guarantees of their social and environmentally responsible.

Local approach, global victory

Miguel Angel House has said that recognition of Murcia as "City of Forests" further strengthens the commitment to fight the effects of climate change and "tells us that we walk on the right track."

In this sense, the Mayor pointed out that municipalities have to play a leadership role because only in Europe, 75% of the population lives in cities, where it consumes 80% of energy.

Hence the importance of cities involved in the fight against climate change, which makes "local authorities in key sustainability."

In the case of Murcia, the Plan of Action for Sustainable Energy has set itself the challenge of reducing by 2020 the 40% reduction in 2007 and to reach this goal, aimed to reduce by 20% through savings measures, energy efficiency and renewable energy and another 20% through the creation of CO2 sinks (green areas).

Murcia City Council spent annually some 290,000 euros to acquire 19,742 stationery products, especially paper packets, each with 500 pages, giving a total of 9,871,000 pages.

Furthermore, in the last 2 years have planted 45,190 trees on public roads, gardens, schools, etc, and now Murcia has an area of 1,603 hectares of farm forestry municipal few years ago when barely 1,000 hectares.

The measures put in place around the Action Plan for Sustainable Energy Murcia have saved 195 GWh / year (gigawatt hours per year), representing 117,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
