The Murcia Book Fair closes its first virtual edition with about 38,000 visitors (18/10/2020)

About 38,000 people have enjoyed the III Murcia Book Fair, which was held from October 7 to 12 with a program adapted to the virtual format due to the current situation derived from the pandemic.

 The Archaeological Museum, the Párraga Center and the Graduate Hall of the Faculty of Law have been the main venues in which cultural and literary activities have been developed, such as round tables, book presentations and workshops, among others.“Thanks to new technologies we have managed to make Murcia once again a meeting point for writers and lovers of letters.

With the data obtained, we can affirm that the Book Fair is already a consolidated event in our city, a sure bet for culture and the promotion of literature and reading ”, highlighted the councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Barnabas.Specifically, some thirty face-to-face events have been held, with all the security measures against Covid-19, such as limited capacity, safety distance and hand hygiene.

Likewise, all the activities have been broadcast via streaming.A total of 14 virtual booths have been available through the page https://www.ferialibromurcia.com/casetas-online-2020/.

Considering the exhibitor data, 18 are counted, taking into account that some publishers have shared booths.The III Book Fair has been organized by the City Council, through the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, together with the Palin Association, the Department of Education and Culture and the collaboration of the University of Murcia.Visitors from different countriesThe Murcia Book Fair has had to adapt this year to the current situation and transform its programming into digital format.

In addition to the booths and exhibitors, which have been available on the web, all the activities and events have been broadcast via streaming, reaching nearly 2,500 broadcast minutes. The new format has allowed this event to have been followed by visitors from different countries, such as the United States, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Canada, the Netherlands, Colombia, Costa Rica and Ecuador, as well as Spain.Regarding the results achieved through the web, an average of 600 daily entries have been obtained to the 30 activities broadcast by streaming, which means that these have been enjoyed by a total of 4,200 people.

On October 7, the day of the official opening, a peak of nearly 1,000 visits was reached.Likewise, the virtual booths have received a total of 33,500 entries through the web portal since the beginning of the Fair, accessing both the virtual events programmed by the exhibitors and the purchase of books.

By age, visitors between 25 and 34 years old predominate, with 33.50%, followed by 18 and 24 years old, with 27.50%.

Regarding sex, the attendance figures are very similar between men, with 54.15%, and women, with 45.85%.The virtual booths will continue to operate on the web for a time in order to facilitate sales to publishing companies.

Even so, the first data confirm that, since its opening, a turnover of around 100,000 euros has been reached.“The virtual format has given us the possibility of opening the doors of the Murcia Book Fair to visitors from other countries.

This year's experience has allowed us to get closer to more people from other geographical areas, a fact that we will undoubtedly put in value to continue working on improving cultural services, thus betting on literature and promoting the book sector ”, Mercedes Bernabé has concluded.
