Murcia commemorates the International Day of the Elderly with the launch of the campaign "Yesterday I could, Today I can" (01/10/2020)

The campaign emphasizes the great role that older people play in society, transmitting a positive image about everyday situations that are generically identified with young people, but that older people carry out on a regular basis."Yesterday May, Today I Can" is the slogan of the campaign presented today, on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of the Elderly, the Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta; and the Councilor for the Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation, Paqui Pérez, to commemorate October 1 that this year has been marked by the global health crisis that is hitting the most vulnerable groups the hardest.In his speech -which has been followed by the presidents, presidents and users of the Social Centers for the Elderly of the municipality, in a telematic way-, José Ballesta stated that "our elders, who are the ones who have been hardest hit by this terrible crisis health, they are part of that admirable generation of Spaniards who have served us as a moral reference, as an ethical foothold in our lives.

"Positive and happy imagesRegarding the fundamental objectives pursued by the "Yesterday May, Today I Can" campaign, they highlight the recognition of the role that the elderly play in society, transmitting a positive image of old age; and promoting active and healthy aging."From the Department of the Elderly we want to offer a realistic vision of older people, making clear their diversity, as well as the talent, commitment and experience they bring us", highlighted Paqui Pérez during his speech, who also insisted on the the need to make citizens aware of the importance of working "to build a society for all ages, where age discrimination has no place".In this way, the images that make up the campaign - which will be broadcast in more than thirty mupis in various parts of the municipality - represent the jovial spirit and the ability of the elderly to adapt to changes and novelties, through everyday situations that society identifies with young people, but that older people carry out on a regular basis.Active and healthy agingLikewise, the mayor Paqui Pérez has emphasized the value of promoting the participation and association of the elderly and promoting their active and healthy aging.Along these lines, he made reference to the Plan for the Decade of Healthy Aging 2020-2023, promoted by the World Health Organization, in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, to achieve coordinated global action capable of uniting to governments, civil society, international organizations, academic institutions, professional groups, the media and the private sector in order to improve the lives of older people, as well as those of their families and the environments where they live.Content digitizationRegarding the digitization of content, the councilor pointed out that "since the Social Centers for the Elderly are closed by indication of the health authorities, the Department continues to work to maintain links and fluid communication with the management teams of the 76 centers for the elderly.
