Huermur supports the paralysis of the demolition of the walls of the Old Prison, in view of the precautionary measures presented in the TSJ (31/05/2020)

Huermur supports the urgent precautionary measures presented this week before the Contentious Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Murcia, requesting the stoppage of the demolition of the walls, gates, and other elements of the former Provincial Prison of Murcia, known like Old Jail.In 2019, the judicial proceeding against the dismissal of the Ministry of Culture of the petition as a BIC monument of the Old Jail of Murcia began before the TSJ, and in light of the latest announcements from the Murcia City Council about the start of the works and demolitions, has requested the precautionary suspension of the municipal project planned for this unique and historic property. The request for these precautionary measures that have been requested from the TSJ, have already been communicated by registration to both the Mayor of Murcia José Ballesta, and the Deputy Mayor Mario Gómez, as well as the Councilor for Culture and Heritage of the Consistory, Jesús Pacheco.Huermur points out that he has learned that if the walls and elements for which his BIC protection has been requested are finally demolished, while the TSJ Chamber is processing the precautionary measures urged, he will not hesitate to resort to criminal proceedings against all those positions and individuals, who may be ultimately responsible. The Association for the Conservation of the Huerta and the Heritage of Murcia (HUERMUR), supports the precautionary measures presented this week before the Contentious Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Murcia, requesting the precautionary stoppage of the demolition of the walls, gates, and other elements of the Old Provincial Prison of Murcia, known as the Old Jail. The Murcia Provincial Prison is an important element of Murcia's cultural heritage, mainly due to its architectural characteristics and its solid historical significance.

This unique building with almost a hundred years of history, was projected around 1922 on land belonging to the Marquesa de Salinas, being completed in 1927, and inaugurated on Sunday, May 26, 1929.

The property has suffered a long period of institutional abandonment and various attempts at demolition and total or partial destruction, managing to survive and currently constituting a basic heritage element in the configuration of the urban appearance of the northern area of ??the city of Murcia.Huermur has learned that in 2019 the Litigation-Administrative Chamber of the Superior Court of Justice of Murcia was initiated, a judicial procedure against the dismissal of the Ministry of Culture of the request to declare the former prison a BIC monument.

A resolution of Culture that would be tortuous, unfounded, and totally devoid of any rigor. The conservation group has learned that precautionary measures have been brought before the Murcia TSJ Chamber this week to paralyze the demolitions projected by the Murcia City Council on this unique building, and that the walls of the historic prison would be carried away, completely cutting off its character as an old prison, and that would grant it its status as a BIC monument. The association criticizes the stubbornness of the municipal government in stripping its meaning of this monumental building of the city, and that collects on its walls much of the history of the 20th century Murcia, and of which part of its memory would be skewed if as it intends the government team, part of its facades and walls are demolished. The request for these urgent precautionary measures urged before the TSJ of Murcia have already been communicated by registration to the municipal officials for their reliable knowledge, sending them both to the Mayor of Murcia José Ballesta, and to the Deputy Mayor Mario Gómez, as well as the Councilor for Culture and Heritage of the City Council, Jesús Pacheco.Huermur remarks that we would be faced with an assumption identical to that of the San Antón prison in Cartagena, where the same Chamber of the TSJ ordered the application of precautionary measures requested by the Cartagena City Council to paralyze the imminent demolition of the prison by a commercial .Lastly, the group indicates that it has learned that if the walls and elements for which its BIC protection has been requested are finally demolished, while the TSJ Chamber is processing the precautionary measures urged, it will not hesitate to go to the road criminal against all those charges and individuals, that could be finally responsible.
