Local financing and the recovery of public spaces unite Murcia and Zaragoza (14/11/2019)

José Ballesta: "Zaragoza and Murcia, fifth and seventh capitals of Spain, we must work to achieve fair financing that reflects that we are poles of population attraction, but also of service provision."

The rehabilitation of the Central Market of Lanuza, an icon of the city of Zaragoza, will serve as a reference for the works the emblematic Murcia market of Verónica, built between 1912 and 1916.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, held a meeting today with the mayor of Zaragoza, Jorge Azcón, a meeting held at the City Council of the capital of Aragon, in which both councilors strengthened institutional relations and shared successful experiences.

The Councilor for Commerce, Markets and Public Roads, Juan Fernando Hernández Piernas, also attended

Specifically, two issues were put on the table: local financing as capital cities of their respective provinces, and strategic projects for the recovery of public spaces, a line of action in which Zaragoza has developed successful initiatives both in the Central Market from Lanuza as in Valdespartera, with the support of the state agency Mercasa.

Regarding the first point, Mayor José Ballesta expressed the need for “Zaragoza, the fifth city of Spain, and Murcia, the seventh, we share common elements, we are the capitals of our respective CCAA in which in recent years we have experienced a Great growth of our population.

We are poles of population attraction, but also of provision of services, since we concentrate both local and regional and state services (hospitals, universities, administrative centers ...), forming large metropolitan areas that cause financing problems in terms of providing these services, since we serve a lot more population than actually lives in the city. â€

“This is an issue that we must work on the main capitals of Spain so that it is reflected in the financing we receive as municipalities, not only by the citizens who live here but by those who develop their lives here, which is another different concept,†said the Murcian alderman.

“Facing the depopulation of large territories of Spain, compared to that emptied Spain, our municipalities must face a progressive increase in the population through fair financing, which allows us to offer the best services to citizens.

The city of Murcia and the city of Zaragoza are part of the Spain that is full, â€said José Ballesta, who recalled that“ Murcia received in 2018 only 221 euros / inhabitant, half that populations of similar size â€.

Murcia looks to Zaragoza to rehabilitate Veronica

Regarding the rehabilitation of Markets, José Ballesta said that “we have come to learn from Zaragoza and its successful experiences, counting on the close collaboration of Mercasaâ€, the state entity chaired by José Ramón Sempere, who accompanied Murcia's delegation during its visit to the Central Market of Lanuza and Valdespartera,

Currently, Mercasa is finalizing the rehabilitation of the famous Central Market of Lanuza, an icon of the city of Zaragoza, whose merchants moved to a temporary tent in April 2018 and will return at the end of this month, when the work will be completed.

The classic Lanuza Market, whose building dates back to 1903, bears both architectural and structural similarities with the emblematic Veronica Market, built between 1912 and 1916.

"We want to provide Verónica with a seal of quality and excellence, with specialized reference bodies to reconcile logistics and commercial activities," said José Ballesta.

Monumental environment of a BIC axis

The Verónica Market is one of the main supply squares in Murcia and is part of a BIC environment in the city of Murcia, next to the Arab wall, the Almudí Palace, Murcia Río and the Paseo del Malecón.

José Ballesta said that "this building, which receives the visit of thousands of Murcia daily, is in a unique monumental environment, being a place very busy not only by merchants and customers but also by tourists" and added that "in addition to the project of Comprehensive market rehabilitation, we are studying a reorganization of traffic and pedestrianization of certain areas. â€

A modernist style building

The current building is a sober modernist style, it was designed by the architect Pedro Celdrán and built between 1912 and 1916. An important action by the architect Daniel Carbonell Ruiz in 1975 allowed the creation of a mezzanine, which gave the market a greater number of dependencies and stalls as it is currently.

Subsequently, the building has undergone other reforms aimed at adapting it to new business needs.

In 2001 and 2004, work was carried out to preserve its general structure.

Currently there is a need for repair and replacement of certain elements such as the restoration of the facade, the change of the roof and the installation of automatic and sliding glass doors, as well as the installation of an advanced fire extinguishing system.
