The Road Cleaning and Waste Management Service reduces CO2 emissions by an amount equivalent to that retained by almost 300,000 orange trees (24/08/2019)

The eco-efficient management of the Road Cleaning and Collection and Treatment of Urban Solid Waste Service, under the Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, avoided last year the generation of 192,851 tons of CO2, a saving equivalent to the amount of this gas that They can retain almost 300,000 orange trees.

This figure is also comparable to the CO2 emitted by diesel cars along more than 938,893 kilometers of travel or by the consumption of more than 56,444,267 liters of diesel fuel, or to its emanation derived from the consumption of light, water and gas from plus 141,000 homes.

Climate change represents one of the most important environmental challenges of the 21st century.

The increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, especially CO2, can represent a serious threat to the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity if we do not act responsibly.

With the Paris Agreement, cities, regions, companies and society in general showed their commitment and support to the national climate action plans, which focus on the internationally agreed global temperature reduction target.

Councilwoman Rebeca Pérez explained that “the City Council of Murcia through the concessionaire Ferrovial Servicios assume the commitment to reduce the global temperature and works daily so that the performance of its activity not only does not contribute to global warming, but that its actions directly impact to achieve the objectives of reducing the carbon footprint â€.

Regarding the calculation of reduced and avoided emissions, the service concessionaire is the first Spanish company, as well as the first global infrastructure and services company, which ensures that its emission reduction objectives are certified by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi ), that is, backed by scientific criteria.

The company has an A rating on the list drawn up by CDP, which makes it an ambassador for climate change.

In addition, it is part of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (since 2002) and FTSE4Good (since 2005) and was one of the first Spanish companies to adhere to the Global Compact initiative

Thus, of the total of 192,851 Tons of Equivalent (Teq) of CO2, in the section of emission reduction, the capture of biogas from the landfill has meant the greatest push of the entire management, reaching a decrease of more than 132,666 Teq of CO2.

An action that also makes possible the self-supply of the Urban Waste Treatment Center of Cañada Hermosa, which also collaborates in obtaining these ecological objectives.

The emissions avoided are followed in importance, a chapter in which the recovery of waste as recyclable materials becomes well known, as well as its transformation into Recovered Solid Fuel (CSR).

This group also includes the creation of compost for agricultural use.

Similarly, the use of cogeneration engines to produce electricity has avoided releasing carbon dioxide into the air.

All this resulted in the finally producing a quantity of emissions that do not reach 24,844 Teq of CO2, which is the Carbon Footprint of this Service for the past year.

In this sense, diffuse emissions from the landfill represent the largest contribution of gas to the atmosphere.

The Carbon Footprint describes the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions that are caused directly or indirectly by an individual, an organization, an event or a product throughout its life cycle.

Its study year after year allows to verify the efficiency of the actions taken in favor of an environmental improvement and aligns with the sustainability objectives set by the City Council.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment granted in 2017 to the Public Services of Road Cleaning and Waste Management of the municipality of Murcia, under the Department of Development, the inclusion in the Carbon Footprint Registry, an action that is of a voluntary nature, for its work against climate change.
