Health offers some preventive measures to prevent listeriosis in pregnant women and the elderly (21/08/2019)

The Department of Sports and Health, directed by Felipe Coello, offers a series of tips to prevent listeriosis in pregnant women, immunocompromised people and the elderly after the latest news of the outbreak in Andalusia.

"Although there is no case in Murcia, we consider it of interest to the citizen to submit some recommendations on the population most affected by this bacterium, the foods in which they can be found, as well as some preventive measures," explains the mayor.

Thus, listerosis is an infection due to the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

The most affected population group is that of those over 64 years of age, and immunocompromised people, pregnant women and infants are also at high risk.

"Pregnant women are at greater risk of contracting the disease because listeriosis can be transmitted to the fetus through the placenta, even if the mother has no symptoms," says Felipe Coello.

In addition, it could cause premature births, abortions or children born with malformations, especially neurological.

In chronic, immunocompromised patients, the elderly and young children can cause serious complications (infections characterized by septicemia and meningoencephalitis).

Food with caution

Listeriosis is found in ready-to-eat foods that can be consumed without prior cooking, with a long shelf life in refrigeration and often vacuum packed, such as smoked fish, soft and semi-soft cheeses, cooked meats and pates.

Special attention should also be paid to dairy products made from raw or unpasteurized milk, such as Brie or Camembert cheeses, and ice cream.

On the contrary, hard, processed and cream cheese are not a source of infection.

In addition, raw consumed fruits and vegetables should be taken into account when they have not been properly washed and disinfected, even those that are ready to be consumed.

Preventive measures at home

The Councilor for Sports and Health recalls that prevention is always the best ally to avoid infections and remedy diseases as soon as possible.

So one of the measures to consider at home is to wash your hands before handling any food.

"It is important to avoid cross-contamination of raw and cooked foods, disinfect surfaces where food, utensils and cutting boards are used," explains Felipe Coello.

In addition, thoroughly wash the fruits and vegetables that are to be consumed raw and maintain the cold chain of food during transport.

Finally, from the Department of Sports and Health they recommend never defrosting food at room temperature, refrigerate, as soon as possible, foods that have not been consumed and consult those that can be ingested during pregnancy to avoid risks.
