A walk through the Medieval Murcia following the layout of the old city wall (20/08/2019)

The works of the Itinerary of the Wall of Murcia begin, a journey that will allow you to discover the heritage legacy of Medieval Murcia, following the path of the former defensive structure of the ninth century.

José Ballesta: "Recovering our roots and projecting our future, connecting Murcia of the Middle Ages with that of the 21st century, is a strategic and integral transformation project that we have called 'Murcia Medieval'".

Three cultural itineraries have been established: Paseo de la Muralla, de la Arrixaca and de la Judería.

Together they form a circular route that will be linked to all the architectural and museum elements that are located around the Wall and its doors.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesús Pacheco, and the Councilor for Employment, Economic Promotion and Tourism, José García Rex, has attended today the start of the works of the Itinerary of the Wall of Murcia, a route that will allow you to discover the heritage legacy of Medieval Murcia, following the path of the old wall.

“The Middle Ages was a time of wonderful splendor for the city of Murcia, the period in which one of the most imposing and ancient architectural elements that Murcia has, such as the wall that surrounds the city, or the time in which that the ditch network was built, one of the most portentous hydraulic engineering projects in the world and that, today, nine centuries later continues to irrigate the Garden â€.

“Recovering our roots, connecting Murcia of the Middle Ages with that of the 21st century, combining heritage and history with the external projection of the city and its future, is a strategic and integral transformation project that we have called Murcia Medieval, with which we are recovering the wealth of wealth that Murcia lived during the prosperous reign of King Wolf, â€said the mayor.

The works that have begun to be carried out involve the recovery of the surface layout of the old wall, with a distance of 3 kilometers along the city, which will allow to know the part that remains in the subsoil and contemplate the visible wall that has been excavated

an itinerary that will be linked to all the architectural and museum elements that are located around the Wall

The budget is € 374,422 and the term of execution of the works is three months.

Paseo de la Muralla, de la Arrixaca and de la Judería

Three cultural itineraries have been established around the layout of the wall and the spaces where its doors were opened, which together form a circular route that will serve to know part of the Medieval Murcia and the numerous vestiges that are still preserved.

1) The first of them is the Paseo de la Muralla, which departs from the Visitor Center of the Wall of Santa Eulalia.

There, visitors will receive an introduction about the origins of the city of Murcia and can see the exhibition that will serve as a guideline for the itinerary.

From there the tour begins in the remains of the Wall of the building of Santa Eulalia, Canovas del Castillo, Plaza Apostles, Plaza de Cardenal Belluga, Catedral and Glorieta, ending this section in the Verónica Wall.

The approximate route of this section is one kilometer.

2) The second itinerary is the so-called Paseo de la Arrixaca, which connects San Pedro Street, Sagasta, San Nicolás, Santa Teresa, the San Esteban site to the Las Claras Cultural Center, which was Alcázar Menor, and the new avenue Alfonso X The Wise.

3) The third route is the Paseo de la Judería, which starts from Romea, and runs through the convent of Santa Ana and Sardoy Square to the Museum of Fine Arts.

A defensive structure that had 90 towers

The heritage of Murcia is connected by an invisible cord that is the City Wall, a large defensive structure whose origins date back to the ninth century and had 90 towers that formed a perimeter of 2,000 m, as well as its different doors: of Orihuela, of the Souk, of the Bridge, of Glassmakers, of the Bull, of the Market, of Santa Eulalia, of the Sun ...

Inside the Medina, and parallel and bordering with the Wall, the most important activities of the Medieval Murcia followed - such as commercial exchanges in the artery of the Souk - and the most important buildings were established (the Aljama Mosque, the Alcazaba , mosques, bathrooms, workshops, etc.).

The legacy of this legacy remains in this axis with the buildings of greater artistic, architectural and cultural interest of the current Murcia.

Medieval Murcia

The mayor informed that “this intervention adds to the battery of actions of the integral project 'Murcia Medieval', an action plan that will allow you to walk along a 12th century street at zero level at the San Esteban site;

walk among the canvases of the wall that surrounded the city in Santa Eulalia;

get to know the castles and defensive fortifications of the city in Monteagudo, walk through a medieval palace in Santa Clara and take a pedagogical and touristic tour that recalls the figure of King Sage, Jaime I and King Wolf, after the remodeling of the Alfonso X walk †.

“Murcia Medieval is an integral project of transformation of the city in the short, medium and long term, which recovers the medieval identity of Murcia - a substantial part of our roots as a town - and that offers a new model of cultural, archaeological and historical tourism†, Crossbow stressed.

Extension of the Santa Eulalia Visitor Center

The mayor also referred to the expansion of the Santa Eulalia Visitor Center and the process of recovering the subsoil wall of said square, “an interpretation area that currently has about 250m2 and in which we are working to expand it to 1,000 meters more squares, joining the two zones of the wall below the city â€.

The project is already drafted and will be tendered over the next few weeks.

This project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund by 80%, within the framework of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy of Murcia.
