1,150 kilometers of solidarity (20/08/2019)

The national solidarity march 'On Bicycle Against Cancer' will culminate in Murcia on August 30 after leaving Santiago de Compostela, a seven-day trip that aims to fight against childhood cancer.

The collection of this initiative promoted by the young Sergio Cepeda will go to the Association of Family Members of Children With Cancer of the Region of Murcia (AFACMUR).

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, and the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, today presented the initiative 'On Bicycle Against Cancer', the national solidarity march which will culminate in Murcia on August 30, and whose funds will go to the Association of Family Members of Children With Cancer of the Region of Murcia (AFACMUR).

"Specifically, the route, which starts this Friday from Santiago de Compostela, will conclude a week later at the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital, after crossing Spain from north to south," said José Ballesta, adding that "it is essential to give visibility to great challenges like this, a trip in which they will travel more than 1,000 kilometers to fight childhood cancer. ”

"Thanks to the restlessness and solidarity of the young people who are part of 'On Bicycle Against Cancer', this year we celebrate the third edition of their trips, a route that will end for the first time at the Virgen de La Arrixaca Murcia hospital," highlighted José Ballesta.

The event was attended by the president of the Association of Relatives of Children with Cancer of the Region of Murcia (AFACMUR), Francisco Palazón, the manager of the entity, Lourdes Albaladejo, and the creator of 'On Bicycle Against Cancer', Sergio Cepeda , who has reached the meeting by bicycle, along with his partner in the race Miriam Fuentes.

One donation per kilometer

'On Bicycle Against Cancer' is a project that was born in 2017, promoted by the young man of La Mancha Sergio Cepeda, 28 years old.

At that time, he was studying at the Faculty of Sports Sciences, in San Javier.

Inspired by his partner, who worked as a nurse in Oncology, he decided to organize a solidarity trip from Santiago de Compostela to Santiago de la Ribera, with which he began to collect micro-donations through social networks;

method known as 'crowdfunding'.

His goal, which was to raise one euro per kilometer, exceeded him: he achieved a total of 1,845 euros, which were allocated to the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

From Santiago to Murcia to fight childhood cancer

This Friday they will ride their bicycles again to face a new challenge: cross Spain from Santiago de Compostela to Murcia in seven days.

In this edition, the proceeds will go to the Association of Relatives of Children With Cancer of the Region of Murcia (AFACMUR).

Specifically, they will begin on August 24 and end at the Virgen de La Arrixaca Hospital on August 30.

11 athletes will start and, throughout each stage, more people from all over Spain will be added.

It is expected that about 30 cyclists will finish the trip in La Arrixaca, of which five of them are Murcia.

200 t-shirts and more than 3,000 bracelets

Donations are made through the web

Through the sale of nearly 200 shirts (out of stock), about 3,000 bracelets and donations to the web, they have now raised more than 8,000 euros.

From Paris to Valencia

In 2018, Sergio Cepeda organized another solidarity trip from Paris to the University and Polytechnic Hospital of the Faith, in Valencia, which was joined by eight cyclists willing to travel the 1,600 kilometers that separate both cities.

They managed to raise 13,281 euros, destined to the investigation of treatments for pediatric cancer patients.
