The PSOE regrets "the obvious tourist slowdown and the miserable commitment to not show the full potential of Murcia" (08/08/2019)

The Socialist Municipal Group has known the report of the Economic Impact of Tourism 2018 in Murcia, presented yesterday, and warns of "an obvious and significant deceleration with respect to 2017, while a mere commitment to municipal policies does not allow to show all the potential that our municipality has, "explains councilor Enrique Lorca.

In this regard, he adds that "with these data it will be very difficult to reach the goal that the mayor of Murcia set for 2020, estimated at 500,000 tourists and 850,000 overnight stays, and included in the Tourist Development Operational Plan (PODT)".

For Lorca, there are also two very important indicators in the tourism sector, not included in the data offered yesterday, and where Murcia is well behind the national average, the Profitability per Occupied Room and the Profitability per Available Room.

On the latter explains that, the national average is € 67.5 and that of Murcia, despite rising, is € 32.4, according to data extracted from the Profitability and Employment Barometer of Spanish Tourist Destinations, prepared by Exceltur for 2018. Therefore, "it goes without saying that this figure leaves us in a rather poor place."

"We have proposed that Tourism is not a 'maría' among the municipal areas; we firmly believe in the enormous potential of the municipality, a potential that, designing policies with perspective and effort, will increase, because Murcia remains an unknown and has a lot what to show and what to offer, "says the councilor, who says that the person in charge of Tourism should travel, first through the municipality to be clear about the immense heritage and history we have, and then by nearby tourist destinations to know what is being done and the results obtained ", declares Lorca.

In addition, initiatives are lacking, such as the tourist value of the Huerta, a clear commitment that Valencia has already made.

In contrast, "today we have the mayor in a photo shoot doing recreations of our garden when the authentic one is forgotten and degraded. It is clear that the recovery of this immense heritage should be taken seriously."

On the other hand, the socialist councilor has pointed out that he is glad that, in a determined way, he is committed to being an Intelligent Tourist Destination, but for this, “one of the first tasks that could be improved is the Tourism Murcia chatbot, which After a year of operation it leaves much to be desired, so much so that requesting information becomes a dialogue of sea breams. "

Likewise, "I am glad of the creation of the Interconcejalías Commission, which had to have been created two years ago, and that is how the Operational Plan included it."

In this way, coordination will be improved, since tourism is transversal and multidisciplinary, according to the mayor, who points out that "this way we would avoid that two large events with the potential to attract tourists and fill hotels and restaurants coincide over time. example, what I experienced with the Bob Dylan concert and the WarmUp during the same weekend this year. "

As for events, one of the tricks, in the opinion of Enrique Lorca, that could be played is to attract sports competitions.

In this sense, "remember that the half marathon of Santa Pola congregates around 30,000 tourists a single weekend. This is one of the proposals of the Municipal Socialist Group and we do not care that the government team copy it, even the make yours ".

On the other hand, in a study by Holidu (portal of holiday accommodation) on the cities with the greatest cultural offer in Spain, Murcia is ranked 31, so "there is a lot of work ahead, since we start with a disadvantage compared to others competitors, but we have enough raw material. "

He adds that "we should reflect on what we are, what we want to be and what we do not want to be touristically speaking. It is a pity that we are not taking advantage of everything our land can give of itself, and that we have great professionals doing a memorable job such as Murcia congress office and associate members to make Murcia a destination in nationally recognized technical meetings. "

"The Socialists have the certainty that tourism must be one of the economic engines of our municipality and we will demand that the Municipal Government be so.

You have to take tourism seriously and not say that you are going to bet on national and international promotion as if that consisted only of pressing a button, "he concludes.
