Electric vehicles will have free access to 3,000 parking spaces in the city after the summer (05/08/2019)

The Local Electric Vehicle Strategy is part of the commitments acquired through the signing of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, through which the municipality of Murcia will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40 % for the year 2030

The Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and the president of the Parking Association of Murcia, José Fuentes, have signed this morning the collaboration agreement between the City Council and this association for the promotion of sustainable mobility in the municipality.

Thanks to this agreement, electric motorcycles or vehicles with the DGT label with the '0 Emissions' label can park one hour for free in public parking lots after the summer.

Likewise, from the association they undertake to have parking spaces reserved for these types of vehicles and at least one electric vehicle charging point in their car parks.

It is intended with this agreement to develop actions aimed at the protection of the environment and the sustainable development of the city of Murcia, through projects in which sustainable electric mobility is promoted and that contribute, from the most diverse aspects, to the achievement of the municipal strategy of adaptation to climate change and, more specifically, of the municipal electric vehicle strategy.

Councilman Antonio Navarro explained that "electric vehicles represent an important environmental benefit for our city and that is why we work, as one of our main lines of action, in promoting this type of mobility. Electric cars are an environmentally capable bet to restore the air of our cities and minimize noise. "

There are currently 13 car parks - most of the municipal concession, but also some private ones - that are part of this initiative (Glorieta, Verónicos, Saavedra Fajardo, San Andrés, Vibelsa, Centrofama, Universidad, Santoña, Campillo, Libertad, Excelsior, La Vega and Alfonso X) and that offer about 3,000 rotating places and 2,000 for residents and other uses.

According to the data of the DGT, While in 2015 the electric vehicles registered were 49, in 2016 it reached 68, in 2017 to 97, last year 2018 it reached 137 and so far from 2019 they have already accounted for 191.

Local Strategy of the Electric Vehicle of the City of Murcia

We must remember that Murcia has a Local Strategy of the Electric Vehicle of the City of Murcia that was approved in 2017 as a result of a participatory process.

Its objective is to reduce the emissions of polluting gases associated with urban activity and is part of the commitments acquired through the signing of the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, through which the municipality of Murcia will reduce emissions of greenhouse gases at least 40% by 2030.

Among the actions already implemented, the following stand out:

- Creation of a network of free municipal charging points: located in Glorieta, Ronda Sur, Plaza Circular, Jaime I (double), and Río Segura Avenue.

The sites were also selected by a participatory process.

In addition, there are 6 public car parks equipped with charging infrastructure and 18 more recharging points of private initiative but public access

- Electric recharge in neighboring communities

- Subsidies for the acquisition of electric vehicles, improvement of energy efficiency and providing community garages with charging infrastructure.

Last March the subsidies for the purchase of bicycles and electric vehicles of 40 Murcia were approved.

- Reservation of exclusive parking spaces for electric vehicles: 50 spaces available, monitored with sensors and an App

- Exemption in the payment of the ORA and resident areas to electric vehicles

In addition, Murcia will be the first city in Spain in which Iberdrola deploys the first public network for fast charging of electric vehicles, an initiative that is part of Murcia Smart City.

To develop the project, a joint work plan has already been established that focuses on three strategic lines in order to make them a reality in the coming months.

The first of these is to achieve the objectives of electric mobility through the initial analysis of the locations of fast charging points of electric vehicles taking into account existing charging points, parking spaces already reserved in the city for electric vehicles and actions regarding parking reservation planned in the Smart City MiMurcia project.

For this, the City Council has provided Iberdrola with the list of locations already analyzed, both of the current charging points in service and those planned to date.
