The mayor Paqui Perez maintains a first meeting with the Federation of Elderly Centers to address the main challenges at the start of the mandate (15/07/2019)

The Councilor for the Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation, Paqui Pérez, held a meeting this morning with the president of the Federation of Social Centers for the Elderly, Simón Párraga Martínez, and members of the Board of Directors to establish a work calendar on the subject of active aging, improvement of the management of the 76 senior centers, as well as the implementation of a Municipal Plan to combat the loneliness of the elderly.

One of the challenges of the service is that these spaces become reference points capable of attracting a greater number of partners.

"Currently there are more than 30,000, but we will work to reach the 90,000 Murcians with more than 60 years living in Murcia, diversifying the range of activities and coordinating work with the Federation, to feel our support," Paqui Pérez has indicated.

Another priority is the implementation of the Municipal Plan to combat the loneliness of the elderly.

In the municipality of Murcia, a total of 16,196 people over 60 live alone and 73.68% are women;

some 2,714 people are over 80 years old, 2,271 are over 85 and 1,187 are over 90, and all live alone.

"These are worrisome data that require a serious analysis and approach to deal with a transcendental issue that responds to the change in the model of society we are experiencing," said the responsible mayor.

Likewise, the Department plans to soon convene the Mesa del Mayor, a municipal participation body capable of giving voice to all groups and associations of older people of Murcia, where the Federation will have a relevant role.

Reference has also been made to the need to continue working in line with the motion approved in 2016 for the accession of Murcia to the Network of Cities and Communities friendly to the elderly, promoting their participation and the implementation of actions that improve their quality of life and transform the municipality into a more accessible and friendly place.
