The XXIII International Competition of Tunas del Barrio del Carmen will fill rounds the Artillery Barracks this weekend (05/07/2019)

The Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesús Pacheco, the Councilor for Employment, Economic Promotion and Tourism, Pedro García Rex, and the councilors of the Municipal Socialist Group Teresa Franco and Enrique Lorca, received this morning the 12 groups, from 7 cities and 4 countries -Spain, Mexico, Colombia and Puerto Rico-, which will participate during this weekend at the XXIII International Competition of Tunas del Barrio del Carmen, to be held at the Artillery Barracks and organized by the Tuna of District of the University of Murcia.

Thus, the tuna of the Faculty of Medicine, Literature and Teaching of Murcia will be on the stage as the invited guests, the University Cuarentuna of La Coruña and the Tuna de Empresariales de Barcelona - as invited groups - and the Tuna de Ingenieros Agronomists from the UMH of Orihuela, the Tuna Femenina Universitaria de Almería, the Cuarentuna University of Málaga, the Tuna Confraternidad de Zipaquirá (Colombia), the Estudiantina Universitaria Potosina of San Luis Potosí (Mexico) and the Tuna Cardinals of San Juan (Puerto Rico) ) - as participants in the contest.

This year, the General Air Academy has been chosen as Grand Master, on the occasion of its 75th anniversary, and as a Godmother to the Murcian humorist Raquel Sastre, who will be officially appointed tonight.

Admission is free and every evening there will be tastings and surprises for the attendees.

The enclave in which the Contest will take place is the Artillery Barracks that will have 2,000 seats, free Wi-Fi and a children's area.

The festival can be followed live through the festival's new website www.certunasmurcia.es.

Tonight at 8.30pm there will be a round and an offering to the Madrina de Honor of the Contest, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, in the Iglesia del Carmen.

After a tasting of veal and beer sausages, scheduled for 9.30 pm, the appointment of the Grand Master and the Godmother will be made and, in an extraordinary way, the Music Unit of the General Air Academy and the Tuna de the University of Murcia.

To end the day will be served paparajotes and coffee pot.

Tomorrow, Saturday, July 6, a crispy puff pastry tasting will be offered at 9:30 p.m., while at 10:00 p.m., the official contest with the participating tunas will begin.

After the awards ceremony will be offered a tasting of Galician queimada and the largest 'parliamentary' in history (bacon ham sandwich and spicy chorizo, tomato and olive oil) prepared for a thousand people.

In this contest, created in 1997, nearly 3,000 people from 126 groups from 67 cities, 11 countries and 3 continents have already participated, which supports it as the international benchmark in its category.
