The construction of a lookout-scenario on the Aljufía will turn the Molvo de la Pólvora and its surroundings into an attractive place for citizen enjoyment (07/06/2019)

This summer will begin the refurbishment of the remains of the Molino de la Pólvora and its surroundings, whose work has been awarded today by the Governing Board.

The intervention consists in the recovery and putting in value of the rest of the construction, the restoration of the stone panels of the environment of the irrigation ditch of the Aljufía and the recovery of its quijeros.

Likewise, a natural environment will be generated that serves as a stay area and a lookout-scenario will be built to contemplate and make known the whole, transforming this enclave into an attractive space for citizen enjoyment.

The intervention aims to consolidate, conserve and rehabilitate the hydraulic structures of the old mill, in order to ensure its conservation and restore the correct circulation of water from the irrigation ditch through its channels.

So that the water runs like this, in a channeled way, it will be necessary to rebuild and re-create some section of its walls, to avoid the current transfer from one channel to another and to cancel the erosive effect of the water on the walls and baseboards devoid of their original coverings.

To respond to the restoration needs of the Molino de la Pólvora, as well as to refurbish its immediate landscape environment, the action will be carried out from six points of view: the archaeological remains, the spatial and material conditions of the channel of the ditch , of the natural environment, the current and past uses, the incorporation of new uses and the problems of signaling and accessibility of the routes and their singular places.

Regarding the archaeological remains of the mill, the intervention will be reversible, so that it may be dismantled in the future if required.

In addition, it is proposed the repair and consolidation of the remains currently existing in the channel for its correct hydraulic operation, its constructive conservation and its historical understanding.

Open channel and a new bridge

As for the spatial and material conditions of the channel of the ditch, the condition of open and alive channel will be maintained, and the visual impact of the bridge that is necessary to build to cross the ditch will be reduced, replacing the current one.

The project foresees the restoration and consolidation of the quijeros of the ditch and its area of servitude.

On the other hand, the objective is to favor the conservation and recovery of native and traditional species of the environment or that can be introduced to solve functions of shading, signaling or edge protection, control of views, creation of recreational areas, etc.

Likewise, irrigation mechanisms and protocols will be consolidated in the surroundings, paths that maintain efficient shortcuts on foot within the intricate structure of roads in the garden, resting corners, places linked to games, etc.

Likewise, past uses that can be discovered through historical reports will be recovered.

Outdoor auditorium

Regarding the incorporation of new uses, the objective foresees to execute it by means of the design and manufacture of some elements with double functionality, in which the same place or material gesture complies, in addition to a main use, such as the viewpoint in flight over the channel, a secondary use, in this case, when the floor of this viewpoint becomes the stage of a small outdoor auditorium created with just a subtle movement of the natural terrain to obtain the appropriate slope.

Finally, regarding the problems of connectivity, accessibility of the routes and their singular places, as well as signaling, intervene to favor the coexistence of road, bicycle and pedestrian traffic and resolve conflicting situations that arise in relation to the Facades of the orchards and, above all, the approach to the edges of the open channels of the Huerta.

High landscape value

As a consequence of this action, the surroundings of the Molino de la Pólvora will become a quality space for the observation of the archaeological remains of the old mill, as well as the enjoyment of an area of leisure and rest in the adjoining plots to which it was traditionally linked to the exploitation of the same, which present a valuable spontaneous and feral vegetation that, together, make this place a corner of very high landscape value.

It also serves as a model of how to undertake the recovery of the environmental and cultural heritage of La Huerta, integrating it into a route for your visit, explanation and enjoyment.

The basic and execution project of the remains of the Molino de la Pólvora and its surroundings, in the Carril de los Canalaos, Rincón de Beniscornia-Guadalupe, will be executed by Construcciones Juan Gregorio SL, with a budget of 210,936 euros and a deadline of 8 months.

The initial plan had to be modified as a result of the archaeological surveys that were carried out.

This action is part of the Plan of Action of the Huerta, which includes 33 strategic initiatives, promoted by the Department of Urban Planning, Environment, Water and Garden.

The project's writing team has been directed by the architects Juan Antonio Santa-Cruz and Antonio Abellán, as well as by archaeologist Luis A. García Blánquez.
