The City Council and Cáritas join to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the typhoon in the Philippines (27/12/2018)

Social Rights and Development Cooperation allocates 10,000 euros to assist 15,400 victims.

The City Council subsidizes Cáritas with € 225,000 for the provision of services to children and families with difficulties in the municipality of Murcia.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, signed this morning the humanitarian aid agreement to the Philippines, to address the emergency of food, basic material, shelter and livelihoods of more than 15,400 people, affected by the super typhoon Mangkhut, which left a trail of destruction of the Philippines to China last September.

"The humanitarian aid for the affected families, which are close to 3,000 homes, remains essential, given the emergency situation in the country," said the mayor, adding that "Murcians feel especially close to the Filipino people, with whom we share history for more than three centuries, and that still today represents a bit of Spain in Asia. "

In total, the City Council allocated 10,000 euros, through the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation, to provide assistance to the victims, with the delivery of humanitarian aid and care for the population affected by the great typhoon that devastated especially the northern part of the Philippines, leaving dozens dead and forcing the evacuation of thousands of families.

After the signing of the agreement, which was attended by the Councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, and the Secretary General of Cáritas, Juan Antonio Illán, a meeting was held between the City Council and Caritas Diocese of Cartagena, a non-profit organization, established in the Diocese of Cartagena in 1955.

Children and families at risk of exclusion

At the meeting, several issues were addressed, such as the execution project on the municipal land plot assigned to Cáritas.

The collaboration agreement between the City of Murcia and Cáritas was also evaluated, which provides support to 45 children between 1 and 3 years old at the CAYAM Children's School in El Palmar;

the Residential Welcoming Service in Sheltered Homes, which has benefited 130 people this 2018;

and the Welcoming and Social Accompaniment Service for families in a situation of severe poverty, in which some 4,000 people have been treated.

The City Council has subsidized the provision of these services to Cáritas with 225,000 € during the current fiscal year.

Promotion of the circular economy

Cáritas has also plated the City Council to explore new collaborations in the field of training and employment to continue promoting the social economy, one that puts people at the center of their activity and contemplates the social benefits in their balance sheets.

In this sense, Caritas has asked the City of Murcia the expansion of points of guidance, accompaniment processes and training for people with difficulties in accessing the labor market.

The proposal of Cáritas for the promotion of the social economy goes through specific aids to the insertion companies and to the market reserve in the bidding documents of the public contracting carried out by the City Council.

Social investment increases by 33%

The Department of Social Rights has increased its budget by 33.43% since the beginning of the mandate, from 22 million euros in 2015 to 29.5 million in 2018. With respect to social entities of the municipality, the City Council has granted aid to a total of 98 associations and entities, for an amount exceeding 1.5 million euros.

"The future of a city is the future of its inhabitants and, therefore, our Social Model prioritizes social cohesion and coexistence.

We consider essential prevention against vulnerability and social exclusion, but also ensure equality, the rights of children, the elderly and respect for diversity, "said the mayor.
