The UMU twin registry performs the first study of sleep quality in the adult Spanish population (20/12/2018)

Researchers of the Twins Registry of the University of Murcia (UMU), belonging to the area of Psychobiology of the same, have made the first study of sleep quality on the adult Spanish population.

"Until now there were only partial samples and not current," says Juan Ramón Ordoñana Martín, coordinator of the registry.

The analysis, published in the journal Sanitary Gazette, is the only one that contributes the percentage of Spanish adults (44-70 years) with a poor quality of sleep: 38%.

"We corroborate that women were twice as likely as men, and when age increases the quality worsens", highlights Juan José Madrid Valero, a predoctoral fellow at UMU through the Seneca Foundation.

Likewise, it was determined that the environmental factors that cause these problems are different in men and women.

While in them it is usually anxiety, or derived from their role as caregiver of children or parents;

in males, the most common case is related to work schedules or illnesses, such as respiratory disorders.

"The advantage of the registration of twins is their potential to connect with different fields of research"

In this study, as in the majority, UMU experts use this registry to know to what extent a behavior or trait is influenced by genetic factors.

"We use the classic study of monozygotic twins who share 100% of genetic material, and dizygotic twins, with 50%." We compare to what extent they resemble one another more than others: if twins are more similar than twins, it usually means that they are due to genetic factors, "says Ordoñana Martín.

The samples of the registry are obtained directly from the population.

"We have registered around 3,000. A representative sample that allows us to perform analyzes comparable to those performed with classic samples." The advantage of the registration of twins is their potential to connect with different fields of research ", highlights Madrid Valero.

What allows them multiple national and international collaborations in very diverse areas.

One of the examples is the participation of Madrid Valero, through a stay funded by the Seneca Foundation, with the Goldsmiths University of London, in a meta-analysis on non-pharmacological interventions in insomnia.

On the other hand, the experts emphasize the impact that genetics has in areas such as health, education or even the development of the human being.

In this sense, "The advances that are taking place in the field of genetics pose new perspectives and challenges, it is important to both investigate and correctly convey the implications of new discoveries to the general public," says Ordoñana Martín.
