The UCAM, the city of Málaga and the COE sign a protocol of intentions to build and implant in the city of Malaga 'The University of Sports' (19/12/2018)

The Catholic University of Murcia and the city of Malaga, together with the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), signed this morning, in the Hall of Mirrors of the city council itself, an administrative protocol of intentions with the aim of being built and implanted in Malaga a new center of university studies that, by means of a public concession, would be located in 38,651 m2 qualified as a general system of public facilities and services of a municipal nature between the Avenida Imperio Argentina and the La Térmica road (Litoral Oeste).

The protocol has been signed by José Luis Mendoza, president of the University;

Francisco de la Torre, mayor of Málaga, and Alejandro Blanco, president of the COE.

The ceremony was also attended by Monsignor Jesus Catalá, Bishop of the Diocese of Málaga;

members of the Governing Council and academic heads of the UCAM and the government team of the corporation.

José Luis Mendoza said during his speech that "we want to create here the UCAM of Malaga, a project totally linked to the Spanish Olympic Committee, with them we are working mainly in the work of helping athletes to have a higher education and be prepared on the day in the morning".

Mendoza was also excited about this project and stressed that what "we have signed can be very important for Malaga, for all of Andalusia and also for Spain".

Among the degrees proposed in the protocol are 11 that could add 4,000 students in its sixth year of operation according to the calculations of the UCAM.

These are degrees in Physical Activity and Sports Science (in Spanish and English), Nursing, Physiotherapy, Medicine (in Spanish and English), Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Dentistry (in Spanish and English), Psychology and Therapy Occupational.

It also provides for the installation of a center of high professional specialization in the field of sports, health and nutrition, within the framework of a project linked to the EOC.

The contribution of the Spanish Olympic Committee would be to promote and promote the celebration of joint actions in Malaga that favor the realization of activities aimed at improving the results of Spanish athletes in national and international competitions at the highest level.

In this sense, Alejandro Blanco, president of the COE, said that "the UCAM is no longer just a reference in Spain, it is also in Europe and in the world."

He also added that "there is a before and an after for Andalusia but there is a day followed by what is the UCAM, the work that is doing with the Spanish Olympic Committee, the work of dissemination and promotion of values, support for athletes or the formation of people. "

A project of public and social interest

The Malaga City Council considers it of public and social interest to support the creation of the UCAM Málaga campus, linked to the EOC that would complement the current academic offer, both public and private, where higher education is offered;

develop research of international relevance in the field of sports, health and nutrition;

the sport is promoted from the base to the elite in all Andalusia organizing events and competitions, sponsoring athletes and local sports clubs;

international students are attracted;

and work with the surrounding companies to, in short, create employment.

The protocol establishes that the UCAM will request the public concession of the aforementioned land, providing a report and the documents that are required for processing under the current legislation.

The conditions of the concession will be regulated in the corresponding technical and legal-administrative specifications: the duration would be 35 years, renewable by another 35, a fee would be established unless it is conclusively proven that there is no economic benefit for the concessionaire foundation and a chronogram of the implementation of the buildings, among other points.

Francisco de La Torre, mayor of Malaga, said that "we have great hope and hope that these eleven grades with which this university center in Malaga will begin have a great success."

De La Torre added that "they are very complementary aspects of what the University of Málaga does and we want the existence of this private university to encourage the public to be even better".

De la Torre already announced on October 4, during his speech at the Andalucía Forum of the Europa Forum, the desire of the UCAM to settle in Malaga with a project linked to the COE, and explained that the city was studying its location south of the Palace of Sports José María Martín Carpena.

The protocol of intentions will be available on the municipal website of Malaga (www.malaga.eu) for consultation.

It should also be noted the words of Monsignor Jesus Catalá, Bishop of Malaga, towards this project.

"I have always supported this idea because I think it is a very good thing that gives freedom of teaching, it is a platform for evangelization and its presence in Malaga is the beginning of a great work," added Monsignor Catalá.
