They begin to plant the 1,800 trees of 25 different species that will fill the Vía Verde with life (18/12/2018)

The specimens belong to 25 species: traditional (fig, mulberry, pomegranate, jinjolero, etc.), large size (pine, cypress, palm tree ...), and abundant flowering (almond tree, tree of pagodas ...).

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, visited this morning the works of the Greenway, where they have begun to plant the 1,800 trees that will fill this healthy path of life 8.5 km, while the construction of the pedestrian and cyclist road that will connect the districts of Los Dolores, San José de la Vega, Beniaján, Torreagüera and Los Ramos is progressing in parallel.

In total, the trees belong to 25 different species, among which stand out traditional species (fig, mulberry, pomegranate, jinjolero, etc.), of large size (pine, cypress, date palm ...), and abundant flowering (tree of the love, almond tree, non-invasive red eucalyptus, tree of pagodas, acacia of Japan, false acacia, etc.).

These specimens are added to the 400 trees already existing along the Greenway and which will also incorporate more than thirty shrubs and a score of species for planting that will fill this healthy itinerary with color and aromas.

The project also includes the installation of street furniture, signage and lighting.

The Greenway will connect on foot and by bicycle the districts of the South, along a route of 8.5 km, a project of transformation of the municipality whose works face its final stretch and that will allow to incorporate 200,000 m2 of spaces of high landscape value , connecting the Huerta and the districts of the Costera Sur with the city of Murcia.

José Ballesta said that "the Greenway is part of the strategic project of the city 'Conexión Sur', aimed at restoring the centrality and prominence of the neighborhoods and districts of the south, and for which the City Council is recovering the Segura river environment for turn it into a natural and urban space of leisure and conviviality, and project a large avenue with gardens and green areas, playgrounds, living areas and outdoor sports spaces in the other 200,000 m2 of public space that Murcia will gain with the elimination of railway track on surface.

"The priority objective is to recover the centrality of the neighborhoods and districts of the south, through greater cohesion among population centers, uniting people, creating social and economic cohesion through the elimination of these barriers and allowing these districts, which have been developing on both sides of the tracks, recover the connection and share new opportunities for growth, "explained the mayor.

The widest Greenway in the Region

The nature trail will be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists alike and will have a width of 5 meters, which makes it the widest Greenway in the entire Region.

The itinerary will have a naturalized pavement that will integrate and mimic the landscape.

Since the work began in summer until now, the route of the entire Greenway has been leveled and cleaned.

Also, the City Council has eliminated the three elevated pedestrian walkways that crossed the old railway line in Beniaján (two) and San José de la Vega, proceeding to the dismantling of the large metal infrastructures that crossed the road and responding to a historic claim of the neighbors.

It has also installed the new pedestrian crossing the road in Los Ramos and, after the elimination of the previous large-scale metal infrastructure with several flights of stairs, allows neighbors to cross from one side to another with total comfort and safety , through soft ramps and that guarantee universal accessibility.

A walk through the heart of the Vega del Segura

The new Vía Verde, which will directly benefit 45,000 residents, crosses the heart of the Huerta de Murcia and offers unique scenic views: on one side, the entire Vega del Segura, and on the other, the Miravete and Altaona mountain ranges .

It is also a route very close to the towns and their services, which also makes possible the gastronomic and leisure activities.
