José Manuel de la Huerga Rodríguez wins the XXIII Vargas Llosa Novel Prize for his work 'Los ballenatos' (12/12/2018)

The Jury of the XXIII Vargas Llosa Novel Prize, organized by the University of Murcia, the Caja Mediterráneo Foundation and the Vargas Llosa Chair of the Miguel de Cervantes Virtual Library Foundation, has decided to award the prize to the original titled Los ballenatos, by the Castilian writer José Manuel de la Huerga Rodríguez, who died on November 22 in Valladolid.

The members of the jury, formed by Francisco Florit Durán, Soledad Puértolas Villanueva, Juan Jesús Armas Marcelo, José María Pozuelo Yvancos and Germán Vega García-Luengos, value in their decision especially the fact that the author has written a lyrical novel, "that It is a brilliant exercise in style, in which the magical representation of the real world through the eyes of children is achieved thanks to the great descriptive, precise and accurate capacity in which the marine depths and aquatic animals are painted with a admirable plasticity ".

The jury also highlights, "its rich vocabulary, which goes from the absolute domain of marine and fishery jargon to the representation of the local dialect, is perfectly suited to delineate a magical territory in which the legends of the Cantabrian persist."

José Manuel de la Huerga was born in Audanzas del Valle (Léon) in 1967. He lived in Valladolid, where he was a professor of Spanish Language and Literature in a Secondary Education Institute.

In 1992 he won the Young Letters Award of Castilla y León for his long story Conjúrote, sad Pluto, until the recent award of the XV Critics' Award of Castilla y León for his novel Steps in the Stone (Menoscuarto, 2016).

In 2012 he was awarded the Miguel Delibes Prize for Narrative to his fourth novel, Apuntes de medicina interna (Menoscuarto, 2011), finalist also of the Critic's Award.

To this same genre belong this blue notebook (City of Móstoles Prize, 2000), Life with David (Multiversa, 2003) and Leipzig on Leipzig (Prize Fray Luis de León Literary Creation of the Junta de Castilla y León, 2005).

He held an opinion column in El Mundo de Castilla y León, between 2001 and 2009, and he collaborated regularly in the written and digital press (Último Cero, TAMTAMPRESS ...) and in different critical forums (La tormenta en un vaso).

He was a tireless cultural entertainer of reading experiences such as the Human Library, in reading clubs and public libraries.
