The Campus of the UCAM will have a hyperbaric chamber (08/12/2018)

There are many known therapeutic applications that hyperbaric medicine offers, such as its usefulness in wound healing, aid in complications in patients treated with radiotherapy, problems of neuropathic pain, musculoskeletal conflicts in traumatology, delays in the consolidation of fractures or in the recovery of the athlete's fatigue;

but given its multidisciplinary nature, there are many fields of action in which research could be continued.

For this reason, the Catholic University of Murcia, through its Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chair, created together with the OHB Foundation, has conducted a scientific seminar with researchers from the institution to establish new lines of work around hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

These investigations can be carried out thanks to the installation, in the Campus of Los Jerónimos, of a hyperbaric chamber.

As indicated by the neurosurgeon José Francisco Fabregat, director of the Chair, hyperbaric medicine consists in treating the person with oxygen of high concentration, medicinal oxygen, with levels higher than normal atmospheric pressure, which causes changes in the organism, "that well used and directed", have therapeutic effects.

Fabregat stressed that despite its benefits, "in Spain we know little about it", and its use is common in Central Europe, Scandinavian countries, the US and some Asian countries.

"There are a few hyperbaric chambers in Spain with a very limited use, especially related to diving and the army, but for use in civilian and common healthcare medicine in public or private hospitals or other types of health entities, there is not much "

He also pointed out that its cost is not high.

"In our opinion should be part of the therapeutic routine, be more normalized use."

For its part, Estrella Núñez, Vice Chancellor for Research at UCAM, highlighted the importance of holding meetings like these in which researchers can learn about new fields of action.

Regarding the matter has ensured that it is a very transversal technology that can be used by many research groups.

He also recalled that soon the UCAM will have a hyperbaric chamber, which will mean "the starting signal for the research projects that we decide to start up", in areas such as health, sports, and even food.
