Cañada Hermosa, environmental education center for the students of the municipality (04/12/2018)

5,000 students belonging to 116 schools in the municipality of Murcia have visited the plant during the past year.

The students of CEIP Maestro José Castaño visited the center today and received a talk on recycling

Cañada Hermosa is a national benchmark in the treatment of waste, performing more than 20 types of treatments and getting techniques such as biomethanization.

Receives more than 400,000 tons of waste per year

The Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, visited this morning the waste treatment center located in the hamlet of Cañada Hermosa Murcia with 27 students / CEIP Teacher José Castaño, located in the neighborhood of San Antón , and the director of the center, Juan Carlos Talaya.

The students of the 6th year of the school have been able to see first hand the treatment applied to the waste that we produce daily.

The students have begun their visit with a presentation at the restored Almazara, converted into an environmental classroom.

The video can be developed with subtitles in English, to contribute as a didactic tool to bilingualism.

Afterwards, the minors were able to ask questions and make their habits related to waste known.

After the talk, the visit begins with the guided tour in the 'waste train', in which each student wears a reflective vest to ensure the safety of visitors during the activity.

The tour allows us to visualize the large amount of waste we generate at home each day and the complex treatment process that must be followed to avoid or minimize the negative impact on the environment and on the health of people.

First a stop is made in the facilities of container plant and rest to see from the unloading of the truck, octopus crane that introduces the waste to the treatment, tromel, until the exit of waste, or to the compactors for unloading in the safe deposit or, in the case of packaging, the collection of bullets of the different fractions obtained from the yellow container.

The facilities allow that, from the walkway, with huge windows, you have an accurate and direct view of the entire process.

The responsible teachers of each group complete the follow-up sheet that allows to know the opinion of each group about the visit.

"Learning to know our waste, where it comes from, the raw materials that make it up and the possible uses it may have once it is recycled is essential to create a true habit that changes the tendency to use and throw away, to make responsible consumption "Rebeca Pérez has highlighted.

Cañada Hermosa, a national reference in the treatment of waste

This center performs more than 20 different types of treatments.

Cañada Hermosa improves the management and treatment every year, getting new techniques such as biomethanization, which is the first plant in Spain with these characteristics.

It receives more than 400,000 tons of waste per year.

The objective of this center is to treat all waste produced by Murcia applying processes for their reduction, reuse, recycling, disposal and recovery of them with advanced technology.

It receives more than 400,000 tons of waste per year and in the first half of 2018 the collection of light, plastic, metal and brick containers has increased by 9%.

Cañada Hermosa, an open center for all Murcians

The campaign 'Open Doors' developed by the City of Murcia and Ferrovial Services allows all citizens to see first hand the treatment that is made to waste.

During the 2017-2018 school year, almost 5,000 students belonging to 116 schools in the municipality of Murcia participated in these guided visits.

To this data we must add the 975 visitors belonging to schools in other municipalities.

"In this way, the plant itself becomes a center of environmental education that helps to adopt concepts, attitudes and processes related to waste," added Rebeca Pérez.
