The Temple of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos has been decorated today to celebrate the Solemn Act of Opening of the 2018-2019 academic year of the Catholic University of Murcia.

With all the collected material, the document 'Instrumentum lobaris' was produced, showing the variety of perspectives and the multifaceted dialogue established by the acts.

This indicates the "sincere desire" to care for young people and find concrete ways to accompany them.

A question that, as Father Giacomo Costa has indicated, does not refer only to the Christian community, but challenges society as a whole.

The role of Catholic universities

During his speech he made mention of Catholic universities and educational institutions of the church, which he has defined as "valuable spaces for the meeting of the Gospel with the culture of a people and for the development of research".

Father Giacomo Costa has reflected on the formation of leaders in this society.

In this regard, he affirmed that they must understand "the ability to exercise leadership not as a form of control and domination, but as a service and promotion of the other, and the Church and many countries of the world need leaders of this type."

Nearly 70,000 students have been trained at UCAM

The president of the Catholic University of Murcia, José Luis Mendoza, recalled that there are already more than 67,000 people who have completed their higher education at the UCAM, "being the highest level of employability."

It has also highlighted the multiculturalism of the University, where more than 2,500 international students are trained, of which 1950 are studying on the Campus itself, coming from more than 81 countries on five continents.

With respect to the strong investment of the UCAM in research, Mendoza has stated that "we want to make our university a magnificent project of teaching, scientific, technological and social innovation, we are a young and innovative university that make opportunities opportunities".

He recalled that the UCAM is the private university that has grown the most in research (according to the IUNE ranking) that analyzes the research activity in the Spanish university.

"The total investment of the UCAM in research of the 17-18 course has been more than 17 million euros, in funds raised for research in national and international competitive calls and contracts with companies," he added.

José Luis Mendoza stressed that the UCAM is providing an important service to Spanish society, "by putting into practice, a fundamental principle protected by the Constitution, such as the freedom of education and the right of families and young people to To freely choose the type of university education that he considers most appropriate, he regrets that hundreds of young people have not been able to study at this university due to lack of space and space, and that many students in the health area are obliged, the Regional Administration, to carry out their hospital practices outside Murcia capital. "We demand that our legitimate rights and freedoms be respected, because there is no true justice if they are not respected." José Luis Mendoza insisted on reaching out to the Regional Government to solve the problems that have been dragging in order to prevail the common good, as well as truth and justice over other interests

is, as established by the Spanish Constitution. "

On the other hand, Josefina García Lozano recalled that this course is formed in the UCAM, a place where "knowledge is generated, which is nothing other than the search for truth", more than 21,000 students, with an increase of them in the Higher Polytechnic School.

García Lozano has assured that the UCAM is in high quality standards of recognition "that have been achieved with the way of understanding this University as a service and not as a business".

Cardinal Carlos Osoro, Archbishop of Madrid, presided at the Eucharist with which the acts began.

During Homilia, he affirmed that the UCAM has a mission.

"Here you work people who come from different places with a common goal, but to achieve it you can not have a heart of stone and for that we must rely on the Lord."

José Manuel Lorca Planes, Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, has stressed the importance of this Synod, whose reflections, he said, "serve for everyone in our day to day and makes us rethink a new style."

And he has called "to open the ears and the heart".
