Change Murcia calls for the elimination of exotic and invasive species from the urban stretch of the Segura river (24/06/2018)

The councilman of Cambiemos Murcia, Sergio Ramos, will present to the plenary next Thursday a motion to request the implementation of a plan for the detection, eradication and control of alien and invasive species throughout the Segura river and its replacement by species autochthonous of the riparian forests of the area.

The mayor has commented that "missing in Murcia Rio actions on the ground that involve an environmental and landscape improvement in the sections of greater degradation."

From the sector of Huerta and City Model municipal training have explained that "the shore is being occupied by washingtonia palms, jacarandas, acacias, tipuanas, melias and eucalyptus, so it would be advisable to completely eliminate and replace native species of ribera like poplar, poplar, ash, tamarisk, willow, blackberry, sarsaparilla, cattails and lilies.

Faced with lighting with spotlights of colors of "doubtful aesthetic quality" and other unnecessary actions, Murcia Murcia proposes "to recover part of the riverbank forest favoring the appearance of the associated fauna, with the environmental and landscape benefits that this would generate".

As described by the sector of Huerta and Ciudad Modelo, "in recent years the Segura River has been affected by overexploitation of water resources, pollution, channeling, dredging and destruction of vegetation, becoming in many sections in a simple channel with hardly any life ".

While they recognize the improvement in water quality, they remember that "we are still suffering episodes of pollution due to the spills that several unscrupulous companies usually do when it rains".
