The PSOE denounces the "passivity" of the PP before the episodes of pollution of the air and the river, despite all the proposals presented (05/06/2018)

The Municipal Socialist Group denounces that, despite the proposals presented, and even approved by the Plenary, "the PP of Ballesta still does nothing to effectively fight against episodes of air pollution and the Segura River in Murcia."

Councilman Enrique Ayuso takes advantage of today's commemoration of the World Environment Day to remember that motions have been approved aimed at improving the network of atmospheric pollution measuring stations in the municipality, to sign agreements with the Ministry of Environment to conduct studies on the state of the air or motions demanding to the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) more measures against the pollution of the river water, "but everything is abandoned".

For this reason, he affirms that "the celebration of the World Environment Day does not consist in going well in a photo in front of a nice poster, but in explaining the initiatives to improve the water status of the Segura river and the air we breathe".

With regard to air pollution, ensures that the latest data published by the Directorate General for the Environment of the Region of Murcia report that the number of days exceeding the maximum values of Tropospheric Ozone admitted by the World Organization continue to increase a year. of Health (maximum 100 micrograms per cubic meter).

In the first five months of this year (data until May 31st), this value has been exceeded in 41 times in San Basilio and 36 times in the Sewer, which are the only two stations measuring the state of the air in the municipal area.

"This is very worrying data, since there is a lot of scientific evidence between high values of ozone in the air and respiratory and cardiac health problems," says Ayuso.

But, in addition, the same official reports from the Community warn of the increase in the levels of nitrogen oxide concentrations during the first months of 2018 with respect to last year.

According to the councilman, it is known that the origin of this problem is mainly in our municipality in the emissions caused by traffic, industries and heating, so effective measures are needed for a reduction in air pollution, such as reduction and pacification of motorized traffic, creation of zones 30 (speed limitation), more sustainable mobility and improvement of public transport and promotion of bicycles, network of deterrent parking lots and greater pressure on industrial activity in the polygons to control and limit their polluting emissions, among other aspects.

On the other hand, the socialists remember that in the plenary session of February last year unanimously approved a study as soon as possible with the Autonomous Community to seriously assess the problem of air pollution in Murcia and install, accordingly, new stations meters to have a greater control of a problem that increases in our municipality, "however, we continue as in the beginning".

With regard to the water status of the Segura River, this week we have seen contaminated water in the section of Murcia due to discharges.

"It is one more episode that we have to add to the long list of contaminations that we have been able to find this year, with episodes of green algae on its surface, dead fish, report of waters not suitable for bathing, determination of absence of oxygen, repeated cases of foam and detergents in the flow, and even the presence of pesticides in alarming values, such as DDT that seemed to disappear but we found it in the Segura ".

Therefore, declares Ayuso, "we ask that the agreed upon be complied with in order to demand from the CHS greater control and effective sanction measures to avoid contamination of the Segura, as well as timely, periodic and exhaustive information on the state of the water, episodes of pollution and actions in the channel and the bank of the Segura river ".

Also, remember, the City Council promised to publish this information on its municipal website and even to order EMUASA periodic reports on the state of the water;

"aspects that, like so many others, continue to be violated".
