On the special service of Telecare from the effects of the heat wave (10/06/2010)

The Department of Social Welfare and Equal Opportunities Policy, which directs Maria del Carmen Pelegrin, has launched since last June 1 Telasistencia special service from the effects of the heatwave, which runs until September 30 .

Although 2968 will serve the users of Telecare, special attention to 764 seniors who are most vulnerable to the effects of heat, according to the indicators proposed by the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, representing 25.6% of total .

Note that until June 8 have made a total of 210 interventions by the various departments (area coordinators, mobile units and installers) in which the recommendations were delivered to prevent the effects of heat.

Speeches in 2009

Last year there were a total of 15,112 interventions, of which 12,770 were calls from center, 2,031 interventions were delivered visitors and 311 recommendations were visiting users at risk.

Also, in the municipality of Murcia, where the two units serve as a complement to mobile home telecare service itself, there were 22 cases related to the effects of heat, of which 18 were treated by the mobile unit in the remaining four was required the presence of 112 emergency service, and two required transfer to hospital.

Based on these socio-sanitary characteristics, we established three levels of risk for users:

- Level 1: are those over 80 who live alone, and that meet any or all other socio-risk characteristics.

Among users of Telecare, there are 140 more that are part of level 1.

- Level 2: Children under 80 who live alone and who meet two or three other geriatric risk characteristics.

There are 596 more who are these features (which represents 20% of total users of the service).

- Level 3: Members over 80 who live alone and together more than three of the socio-risk characteristics.

28 major meet these indicators.

The special service for the heat wave is that from the central call center workers provide a range of recommendations to take every call made or received and a special way to those users assigned different levels of heat.

Recommendations to prevent heat stroke

Outdoors

- If possible, avoid outdoor activities in the middle of the day: From 12.00 to 17.00 hours.

- Avoid transport crowded and without air conditioning.

-Avoid using perfumes.

At home

- Stay in the rooms cooler.

- If you use electric fans, keep a window open to clear the air, but the blinds are lowered and the curtains drawn.

- If you use air conditioning, keep windows and doors closed to keep warm.

- In the hottest hours, try not to use household appliances that produce heat, iron, hairdryer, oven.

- Refresh continuously: Shower, bath, soak your head above.

At meals

- Drink plenty of fluids, mainly sugar and unless medically contraindicated.

- Avoid alcohol or caffeine.

-Use the Telecare service whenever you want, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
