Half of the neighborhoods lose population while the inhabitants of districts grow, where 62% of the registered residents already reside (22/01/2018)

Murcia has experienced an increase of 2,506 inhabitants -0.56% - in its population figure with respect to 2016, standing at 443,509 people, according to the Municipal Population Register 2017.

This slight growth in the municipal population contrasts with the data both regionally and nationally.

Thus, more than half of the increase in 4,809 people produced in the Region of Murcia correspond to those of the municipality of Murcia, representing a growth of 0.33% compared to 2016, nationally the number of population has decreased 0, 04%, with a fall of 17,982 inhabitants.

According to the data analyzed in the website murciaencifras.es, the Observatory of Open Data and Transparency of the City, regarding the population variation in the municipality, highlights the increase in 2.492 people of the population of districts, where 62.06% resides of the population, while in 2005 that value was 56.16%.

In the case of the neighborhoods of the city, the variation has been 14 inhabitants.

Up to fourteen of the twenty-eight that compose it have experienced a demographic decrease with respect to 2016, especially among the most central.

Santiago El Mayor, Espinardo and La Purísima-Barriomar are the three neighborhoods that have grown the most.

For its part, the districts that grow the most are those located in the areas near the north and south of the city and west of the municipality, while those belonging to the Campo de Murcia remain stable, after stopping the depopulation recorded in recent years.

This growth has been concentrated in its entirety in the population of Spanish nationality;

while the foreign population has seen the downward trend followed in recent years, and remains at a value almost identical to 2016, increasing people from the rest of Europe, Africa and Asia, to the detriment of those from the American continent .

In this way, the increase in the population figure has come in two ways: through the natural growth of the population (greater number of births versus deaths) and internal migratory movements.
